Some very strange things are brewing this morning! I count at least three four separate state lottery Web sites that are offline: I'm thinking maybe they all use the same technology provider or hosting company. Can't think of another reason for all to be offline like that. Whatever it is, it's pretty odd. UPDATE: Just added South Dakota to the list to make four!

Maybe it has something to do with Powerball: http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/powerball.com A mind once stretched by a new idea never returns to its original dimensions!

Wow, make that site #5! You're right, perhaps the Powerball site uses the same technology or service provider. If that turns out to be the case, you'd think that with so many sites sharing a common platform, there would be some redundancy to handle a server going down.

With the Powerball Website being down or unable to handle Internet Traffic after a High Jackpot Drawing (this happens quite often since Florida was added to Powerball) folks will naturally revert to State Lottery Websites inorder to get Results and Check their Tickets. With the Powerball Website being down or unable to handle Internet Traffic after a High Jackpot Drawing (this happens quite often since Florida was added to Powerball) folks will naturally revert to State Lottery Websites inorder to get Results and Check their Tickets. I hear you, but I don't think that was it. (The sites are up now.) That was not an error related to volume, and the Powerball site rarely succumbs to volume, even when the jackpot is at record levels. That's because it is a simple static web site, unlike something like Lottery Post, which has an enormous amount of processing that takes place for every single page view. (For this reason, it is a much more challenging task for me to make Lottery Post resistant to volume issues than it is for the Powerball site to do the same.) The type of error that we were seeing seemed to be either an IP routing issue or some kind of web server-related techncal issue. For all those sites to go offline and stay offline for several hours does not look good for whoever is responsible for maintaining the sites. They should have a monitoring service to let the tech know as soon as the site goes offline, and then once they are notified they should have a tech on-call to fix it immediately. I say this because it is not some hobby site. It is run by a major government-backed organization with a huge technology budget.

Hummmm I saw something the other day about some federal computers, in law enforcement mostly, being attacked by a virus ... wonder if the lottery sites "run by a government-backed organization with a huge technology budget" closed down to aid in preventing the spread of this particularly nasty bug. Headline was "Computer virus strikes federal law enforcement computers; US Marshalls, FBI affected" Djklaugh Some things have to be believed to be seen.
