In the 70s "the number" was the last digit of the New York Stock Exchanges advances, declines, and unchanged each day. Sometimes the bookies would change the digit order to avoid huge payouts. When the state lotteries began offering Pick-3 games, almost all the bookies used the state drawing number and enticed players by offering $600 to $1 payouts and betting on credit. Usually with the "Outfit". Where we lived in North Jersey there was a Catholic chucrch that took up just about a city block with the church and the rectory. (It's where the Mob had funerals and my mother always said that whoever sent the biggest boquet where the ones who bumped the dearly departed off, and the biggest boquet was a message.) Across from the church was a candy store. One day my father goes in and then a priest and a cop come in. So all three of them start leafing through magazines and in a while the priest and the cop leave. The guy who ran the store, Red, is in hysterics. My father plays a number and asks him what's so funny. Red says, "The priest and the cop where both here to do what you just did." 1212? That's gross! [12 * 12 = 144 which is a gross] Marcie, I have actually used numbers from individual stock prices for culling lotto numbers. One time that helped me get 3 out of 5 on Fantasy Five, which was good for a $16 prize. But just like any other method, the results were more often bearish than bullish. A few years ago (11/18/06) Ohio's pick-4 straight number matched the final score (42-39) of the Ohio State - Michigan football game. The game finished about 20 minutes before the drawing but 400 players had time to buy a ticket. | | |
