As has been widely advertised, the jackpot for tonight's Powerball drawing is $250 million. Later today, I'll head out to a store in my Chicago neighborhood to buy a $2 ticket, then spend the rest of the day as I always do before a drawing, daydreaming about what I would do with all that money. By Ryan Glasspiegel. Stop day dreaming about how you would spend all that money and begin dreaming about ways to reduce the odds against you. Spend every spare minute thinking about the lottery, how the numbers fall, what might work and why. Your "daydreaming" might then result in having more money than you can every spend in one lifetime.

It has already been proven that 5+1 can be achieved with $1117. but not too many people are interested. Do some number combinations have better odds?

I have no idea of the ratio of the "how I'll spend my imaginary winnings" or "how the winner should spend their winnings" posts to the realistic posts that actually offer ideas of how it could be possible to win a jackpot, but I'll bet it's huge. A few weeks ago someone actually typed "congrats to the winner" in a story about welfare fraud. To get an idea, just count the number of "congrats to the winner" and compare that to the playing strategy posts. I guess it comes down to if they can't win multi-millions playing one or two QPs every once in a while, they can justify their play by saying they are buying a dream. Even if a jackpot winner gave elaborate details explaining a system they used to pick the winning numbers, they would still chalk it up to luck and continue making hundreds of "how I'll" and "congrats to the winner" posts.

Sometimes one can overthink an issue. Planning all day how you will spend the money (for every drawing?) is not a good thing. If you are always thinking about tomorrow, you miss today.

The current large jackpot is the result of a long string of games when the house did win. Cumulative-jackpot lotteries such as Powerball are essentially a massive transfer of value from the dupes who play when the jackpot is small to the wiser ones who wait until the jackpot is big, with the house taking a healthy cut along the way. Here's the one piece of solid advice in this column: If you play Powerball every day, stop playing Powerball every day. If your dollar can be spent for a 1 in 80 million chance of $10 million or a 1 in 80 million chance of $120 million, why would you choose the former? By Jordan Ellenberg. Exactly. Canada's Lotto max was 40 million. I said no one will win, it will go higher. No one won. It was 50 milion with 2 ... 1 million$ bonus draws. No one won. It's now 50 million with 14... 1 million$ bonus draws.
Drive the folks into a frenzy. More money for the lottery people.
They know what they're doing:)
