Cavewoman At The Casino

Well,we're already here at Day 26. Mother's visit is zipping right along, faster than I thought.

Let's see now...in (almost) 4 weeks we've been to the casinos 5 times. We've also been out grocery shopping (3 times), clothes shopping (2 times) Rite Aid shopping (3 times) and hit the SPCA charity book sale.

So far she has not mentioned about visiting any of her old girlfriends here in town or any relatives. Hmmm. I think MacGyver wins out on that front. He seems to keep her company enough. Lucky for her I have the entire series on DVD.

My mother loves eating out. A lot of people do. I'm not particularly one of them. Having worked in restaurants for 10 years in my younger days...well,let's just say...once you've seen what goes on behind the kitchen doors, it makes you think twice about sitting in a booth out front. It doesn't matter how high class or low class the restaurant is, there are a lot of things you just don't want to know.

Every time I ask my mother here at home if she's hungry, I get "No. Not really." She tells me she doesn't get hungry which is common for someone her age. For lunch, she'll have half a sandwich. For dinner we'll have fish or chicken with a little rice and lots of vegetables. She always acts like I'm giving her too much but that all changes when she's at a restaurant.... then it's anything goes!

Now I know why she doesn't eat much at home. (And I don't think it's my cooking because if it was that bad she'd be taking over the kitchen!)

No, she's storing up for when she goes out!

I thought she was going to hurt herself at the casino as she slowly made her way through a 6 inch high club sandwich that could choke a horse. I said, "You're not going to finish that whole thing, are you?" She goes "Why not? It's GOOOOOD."

You'd think she'd be as big as a house but amazingly she's not. Of course she has a little belly now but her legs and arms have remained trim and look just as I remember from my youth. And her neck and under her chin...no wrinkles or waddles or loose skin. No double chin! I can not believe sometimes that she's 80. Hope I hold up that well!

Yes, food makes my mother very happy, lol. Of course now that she's diabetic you can't get her out of the grocery store bakery. Growing up I never remember her eating many desserts. If she had a piece of cake, she'd always scrape off the frosting claiming it was "too sweet". Now she can't get enough of them! Fortunately the medicine she takes for her diabetes must be doing something right because her doctor informed us that she can't believe how well mom's doing on it. She got a clean bill of health before her visit here.

Last time I caught her cruising the bakery aisle I said, "no more sweets" and bought some pretzels for her instead. Those probably aren't the best alternative for a diabetic due to the carbs but it still has to be better than an apple turnover! (one of her faves)  Naturally she doesn't like the unsalted kind of pretzels like I do but the Bavarian ones, those bigger ones. So we got those.

The past few nights I've heard "sneaky" going in the cupboard and hearing a bag rattle after I'm in bed reading. I thought, "oh, she's getting her pretzels." Well, today when opening the "snack" drawer I found out it's NOT the pretzel bag that I've been hearing rattle. The brand new bag of baked Lay potato chips was opened and half gone. So that's what she's been up to.

I've also discovered that "TeeeeeeeRIFIC" and "DeeeeeeLICIOUS" are Mom's two new favorite words. I've heard them repeatedly, especially over the last few days. It is quite a departure from her old favorite words. They were all a bit more on the negative side. To hear her burst out with these exclamations is quite jarring, lol.

I don't know how many times she's mentioned "Bud's Buffet" since she's been here. This is a place downtown she used to go for lunch sometimes when she worked. "Those thick pastrami sandwiches, deeeeeeeeeLICIOUS!"Can't stop hearing about it. So I bought some pastrami myself the other day and made some sandwiches for a quick dinner one night to go along with her potato salad.

Oh, did I tell you she made the potato salad? That was her big day. First "we"(me) had to bake the potatoes "because they make it taste better". (I couldn't tell the difference.) "We"(me) chopped the celery and pickles and olives and made the bacon. She cut up the potatoes and boiled eggs. All I can remember is her stirring and stirring and stirring that salad. Then she said, "Oh, I don't have the strength in my hands like I used to." It was a never ending stir and I finally had to finish it.

While we were eating, I went to get another fork but there weren't any because everything was dirty and I had just put the dishwasher on. She just can't admit it but the old ears are going. She goes, "Didn't you put that dishwasher on?" It was churning loudly away behind us in the kitchen. "It's on. You can't hear that?" She took a bite of her potato salad and said, "Oh, yeah. I hear it now."

While at the book sale, we picked up about a dozen books. They were priced from 75 cents to a couple dollars apiece. When going to pay, the volunteer said "that'll be $15.32." She hands him $60. She thought he said $50.32. But, "I can hear just fine."

One day when she was playing Solitaire on the computer I thought I'd see if she'd like to listen to the Downton Abbey soundtrack. The music is incredibly beautiful so I put the disc in the computer.

Came back a few minutes later and said, "You like that?"

She turns around all frowny and says, "What is this?!"

I'd already told her when turning it on but I said it again, "It's Downton Abbey."

Then she shouts, "WHO??!"

She's gripping a blanket throw around her neck like it's 40 degrees. In reality it is 80 degrees. These are the moments when I realize she is a "little ole lady". LOL.

"It sounds like the Sugar Plum Fairy from the Nutcracker...doot de doot de doot..."

I left and returned a few minutes later. She didn't hear me behind her. I could see she was really concentrating on the game and wasn't paying one iota of attention to the music. She turned around and look startled like she got caught and then she started moving her head back and forth and going..."doot de doot de doot" again like she was really listening. Phony baloney, lol.

Now we are on the Honey Baked Ham kick. Mom loves ham. My grandmother used to say,"I was born with a piece of ham in my mouth". That must be where she gets it from. I can take it or leave it but she's been bugging about it since she arrived.

"You have one of those here?"

Here.

Like HERE wasn't home for most of her life. Like she's somewhere foreign!

"They still have "Po Folks?" she asked on the way to the mall. That was out of business in the 80's. Sometimes she gives me a real blast to the past, recalling things I barely remember as a child. Po Folks was a diner type restaurant that we went to a couple of times. They served drinks in Mason jars, that's all I remembered. Most things she remembers here are gone now. Even in my lifetime it's crazy the things that have come and gone that I grew up with.

Along with the ears, we also cannot see very well but I've yet to see her wear her glasses. And I know she's been to the eye doctor recently because the girl who adjusts the glasses is..."TeeeeeeeeeRIFIC!"

She comes out of her room holding up her sunglasses before we leave for one of our casino jaunts.

"I can't find my case, you know that red one?"

I said, "It's probably in your purse."

She said "I looked there already". And then she went chattering away back into the bedroom.

Her purse is on the dining room chair. I opened it and the case is staring right at me.

But, "Huh! I see just fine."

My cousin ventured out with us on this particular trip. We all decided to meet at 4:30 at the buffet. Around that time I happened to pass her on my way over and so I took her arm and helped her up. As we're walking, she's gripping her purse in front of her and the whole way to the buffet she's pointing and complaining.."That machine? Uh! Worthless!" Then another machine got called out for being "stingy". This went on the whole way.

We get in line and don't have to wait long. I told her to get a piece of turkey because even if the machines are tight, the food is delicious, particularly the turkey. I didn't see everything on her plate until we sat down. But, oh, we haven't sat down yet. She's still looking around at the food and gets all excited.

"Oh, they have garlic bread. Wait'll I show Chris!" She's muttering something about how she wants to tell him about it. So she takes a piece but doesn't put it on her plate. She's holding it instead and taking a bite as we're walking towards our table. I see she's holding the plate kind of tipped, like her wrist is weak and it looked like all the food was ready to slide off it.

I said, "Watch the plate,Mom..." Meanwhile our waiter is asking us what we want to drink as we're walking up to the table. I was saying "a glass of milk" when I heard this commotion going on.

"Ah!" I hear and "Oooof!" Then that airy sound you hear when you sit down in a booth.

I look from the waiter over at mom who was sort of tipping into the booth with her face all  disappointed and there was Cousin Chris ducked under the table.

The garlic bread wound up under the table, of course. I don't know exactly when it fell but the waiter started giggling watching my cousin trying to get it, and I was all standing there like..."uhhhhhh" and then mom was saying...."I just wanted to tell him...." (about the bread, I'm sure. She didn't finish the sentence because by now she was ducking under the table trying to get it.) Someone finally came up with the "minus-one-bite" culprit and my mother heaves a big sigh because her plans of sharing the news about the garlic bread to Cousin Chris got all fouled up. Then she laughed and we started our dinner.

She's got a piece of fried chicken,a piece of turkey...."because you told me to get some of that turkey." she emphasises out of the side of her mouth like she was perturbed. (She's not a big turkey fan) She also had a stuffed cabbage roll with ground meat, another piece of teriyaki chicken and 2 spare ribs. My mother, the Cavewoman.

She polished that off and went back for more. She comes back to the table and I see her mouth already chewing again.

This time she had some beef stew and some General Tao's chicken. We started having a conversation about some dish I was thinking of making when she cuts me right off and holding up a forkful of stew busts in with "There's not an ounce of fat on this meat! It's SOOOOO good." I didn't bother finishing the conversation. I know by now that the meat will win out over me every time. LOL

On the way home from the casino that night, Cousin Chris mentioned about going to Sam's club the next day. Then he was laughing and kidding around about going to the Red Hawk casino because Sam's is just a few miles from there. Well, you know that was the only thing Mom heard. I said,"Yeah,we'll drop mom off at the Hawk and do our shopping, hahaha."

The next morning she came up to me and kept milling around. She was planning on coming with us to Sam's."Was he thinking about going to Red Hawk today?" she asked. And I said, "I don't think so. We're just going to pick up a few things."

All of a sudden she didn't seem in such a hurry to get dressed.

Then she says,"Welllllllllllllll....... I don't think I'll go with you then."

I guess that broke it,lol. It was all over for her when she found out that the casino wasn't on the agenda.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Did you say something?" I hear this a lot. "No" I always say. "I heard a 'ding!'. Was someone leaving you a message?"  There is no 'ding' when someone leaves a message on the answering machine.  "Oh,that must be outside" is her explanation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I decided to take the long route to the SPCA book sale yesterday. Could've gotten on the freeway but then I would have missed out on my mother's latest act...The Talking Billboard.

....."Bella Bru Cafe"......I hear this as I'm driving. Real low...under her breath-like.

I'm trying to talk to her about some of the places that have been torn down or closed since she's been here last.

....."Shannon's Place,that's still there"....

...."Raley's"......

....."What a Pizza...that's a funny name."

At a stoplight a big red truck stops right next to us with a sign on the drivers door.

....."BOB's Towing, Sacramento California!" she exclaims with proud accomplishment.

I groan internally. Is she really trying to prove she doesn't need glasses?

By the time I hear

....."home of the Whopper"....in a tinny high little girl's voice I am glad we have arrived.

After we get back in the car at the book sale, she straps on the seatbelt, sits up and says,"How far are we from Redhawk? hee hee. We can go get some lunch. hee hee"

Something tells me she's not kidding.

"Uh,we can go up to the freeway and cut over." I say, surprised. We'd just been there the day before.

We start driving but I wanted go home and change clothes. I think I said this but between her ears or her attention span, my words get lost in the car.

As we're driving for awhile she leans forward and says, "Where's the cut off? Haven't we gotten there yet?"

I had to tell her again that we were on our way home first.

It wasn't long before we were on the road again. I was bracing for the Talking Freeway Billboard act to come on but it didn't. We were there in a snap and she couldn't wait to get to the Sky Rider machine. I left her there and wandered around. Played many many machines. Lost almost $500. Was down to my last $50 when the White Orchid machine came alive. I sat on there for 2 hours and cashed out at $500.55. Wow. So all in all a great day even if I only made $.55. That's a winning day at the casino, lol.

Then we hit the buffet. My carnivorous mother tore into the food finishing with a slice of Boston Cream pie and a piece of sugar free chocolate cake. (Just for show)

I called my sister and told her about this. She was laughing and saying, "Oh good. I'm glad she's living it up on her vacation. Because when she gets back here, it's back to business." That means...no more sweets. Limited red meat. No going out every single day. Of course my sister takes her to the casino in OK since there's no gambling in TX so it's not like she's completely deprived of fun. (Or food, for that matter, lol)

But my mother does need a little discipline. She's like my child these days and I'm spoiling her. I never had children and thank goodness for that because now I think I would've made a terrible mother, lol. My children would have been brats! I have a hard time saying no.

So,Mom,live it up. Have a blast and we'll do it all over when we "meat" again!!

It's Hammer Time-Adventures With Mom

Mundane Musings-A Day In The Life Of LottoLaughs

Well, we are on Day 3 and lottolaughs has not had a breakdown yet. Wink

Mom pulled up in the SuperShuttle (the plane was early, natch!) at 10:30 am on Sunday. Pixie hair do? Check! Already talking? Check! The "half hug" greeting? Check!

Total repeat of every other visit. I was surprised that she looked none the worse for wear after all that had happened to her over the past year. Nope. Still the eternal teenager at 80.

A lot of preparation went on here at the house before her arrival. Usually she sleeps on the living room couch or in my reclining chair. Even at her own digs she hasn't slept in a bed in years. She can't sleep lying down, has to be propped up due to her acid reflux. Then it was because of the restless legs but that doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. Thought I would get her an adjustable bed for this latest visit. Wasn't sure if she would be able to sleep in it but so far so good.

I never knew that someone could fall asleep so fast. The first evening after dinner we watched a little television. She'd look at me and smile and her head would just fall forward and boom..out like a light. I've never seen anyone do that before, lol.

That went on all evening.

I finally said,"Mom,let's get you to bed." She's looking at her watch and said, "Oh, it's too early, haha." Like I was kidding. It was 10:00. She'd been up since 2 AM. "Don't worry about the time, aren't you tired?" She forgot that she's 2 hours behind here so for her it was around midnight. The eternal night owl,my mother.

Finally we got her into bed. Pills taken? Check! Bed remote instructions given? Check! We're all good.

I raised her up with the remote after she maneuvered on and kept asking, "Is this alright?"

"Yeah! Yeah!"

"You sure? How about this?" I raised it a little higher.

"Yeah! Yeah!"

As soon as I got into my bed it wasn't long before I heard the bed motor whirring away so "No! No!" should have been her answer. I never know when to believe my mother.

My sister had informed me that mom likes to have the closed caption words on the tv. Since she's up at all hours, she doesn't like to disturb my sister in the middle of the night so she'll put the tv low and I know she can't hear it so the words help. I was in the kitchen finishing the dishes after dinner and all of a sudden the tv is BLASTING and some kind of automated voice is emanating from it in another language! How'd THAT happen? I never heard that before! I learn a lot of new things when mom comes to town. I rush in and she's standing up with the remote in her hand. There's some kind of prompt screen on the tv that I've never seen before either. But,hey, the words were scrolling so she must have done something right!

Mom's used to having a clock next to her wherever she sleeps (time must be very important at this age) so the next day we were on a mission to get one since I didn't have an extra. She wanted to go to Rite Aid. (her favorite store. Why, I have no idea.) Anytime she knows we're going somewhere, she is ready in a flash, makeup on,hair combed, sweater half on. Lottolaughs is not in such a hurry. But she makes you feel like you should be.

I was on the computer and she's standing behind me. Mind you, this was very early in the morning. Before breakfast.

Then she's sitting down in front of me. I don't know when she started this waving her hands around while talking. It's very distracting. She also has a new habit of squeezing her eyes shut as she's telling you a story. Maybe it helps her focus more.

"I got the one light switch by the back door...(point point) and then there's another switch over by the bedroom (point, point, wave wave) and in the bathroom they didn't have enough room to put four switches so there's two (point) on top and two (point) on the bottom and........"

During construction of her new room as mentioned in my previous blog entry, she was there and very involved in the day to day goings on. I'm sure the construction workers appreciated this. (Sorry guys!Embarassed)

After a few more waves and a wobbly point at the ceiling (about some other light that she had installed), I was ready to go.

The car was in the driveway so we went out the front door. (First mistake)

I turned my head for one second (just one teeny tiny second) to lock it and "Wobbles" was swaying back and forth like she'd had one too many. "Whooooa, whooaaa". I had to grab her arm real quick and hold on to her.

Of course your balance isn't what it used to be at 80. Especially when you have hammer toes. But mom's excuse was that the "back of the shoe hit the step".

Yeah....mmmm....okay.

I hear the old toes have gotten really bad but since she's going to be here for two whole months, I thought I'd save it for another time to check them out.

I want to save some fun for later, you know.

My sis had warned me that she's not too stable on her feet anymore. In my opinion, she's never been all that stable (har har) even when she was younger. Back when she worked for the state she'd take the bus downtown every morning. The first fall happened in the rain, running for the bus. Splat! Broken collar bone. (I got really good at rolling hair in curlers.) The second fall happened a few years later. Again, at the bus stop. No rain this time but Kerplunk! Broken nose this time. So even on her best day years ago she was a little wobbly.

As we get out of the car in the Rite Aid parking lot, I look down at my mothers feet and one shoe was off. She'd stepped back and right out of the shoe. I see we're going to have a lot of feet trouble this trip.

Today I also learned that apparently you cannot talk to my mother when the television is on. We were right in the middle of a conversation and I could tell she was listening with only half an ear when "Oh, look at Bull and the orangutang!" comes out of her mouth.
Night Court was on and much more important than anything I had to say.
Later as the tv continued on, she stood in the kitchen watching me cook (sort of) with one eye on the tv in the family room. Blow by blow descriptions of what was going on during the program were related to me as I chopped garlic.
Right now she is asking me, "What are you doing on the computer, playing a game?"
And in the next breath her attention is out the window and rambling quietly under her breath..."Oh there's the neighbor, what's his name? Oh,he's moving the car. And...ah! There he goes again! He must work close by because.... " (she's checking her watch).... "he left here at quarter to 9 this morning and now it's just after 5. Huh!"
And now I'm thinking ahead to tomorrow. And the next 2 months.
And of all kinds of hammers.
Hammer toes......getting hammered. Hmmm. Now that's a thought!

Mother is Coming (Oh Goody!)

Yes, it's that time again. I was just looking at my blog and saw that her last visit was in Feb. 2015! Over two years. Wait a minute...make that 3 years! Seems like yesterday, though, lol.

A lot has happened. She was supposed to be here for last Thanksgiving. Then it got postponed to Christmas. But that didn't happen. We'll see if she really arrives on Mother's Day as planned.

Ole mom had a rough year in 2017. First she took a big fall and landed on her face when grocery shopping with sis at the Kroger's. Her knee swole up like a grapefruit but she healed up just fine. Nothing broken. Then there was the scam....

Oh...you didn't hear about the scam? OMG. How many times do we read about these things? How many times has my mother warned me about "don't do this...watch out for that...you know you have be careful when you..."blah blah blah. It figures that SHE'S the one that gets it,lol.

Two "workmen" with vests show up at her house. Tell her they saw a squirrel running up on her roof into the attic. Why she even opened the door in the first place is beyond me. Needless to say but they scammed her out of a lot of money for going up on the roof. There was no squirrel.

She calls my sister at work and says,"Gee, I hope I didn't get scammed." then proceeds to tell her the story. My sister just about went through the roof. My mother called the police and reported it. They showed up,took it all down. Before the police left they told her DO NOT TO OPEN THE DOOR.

An hour later 2 different "workmen" show up. My mother opens the door AGAIN. AGAIN she gets scammed about something or other. They led her outside and I think one of the guys went inside and stole some more money. What was going on in her mind? I have no idea. The first two must have called up their friends and said, "Hey,we got a real sucker. You know lottolaughs mom? Yeah, that's the one. Here, put these vests on. She'll let you right in."

I tell ya...the thing that flabberghasted me most about the whole thing was not that it happened but that MY MOTHER OPENED THE DOOR!! LOL

Growing up my mother NEVER answered the door. When the doorbell rang she'd always say "NOW WHO?" Never the welcoming wagon,my mother. Many a time I remember her peeking out the curtain and her hushing me. Funny, I have an aversion to opening the door myself. I never do either. Guess where I got THAT from?

So that she actually opened the door...and to strangers...just blows my mind.

My sister finally got off work and packed up my mother and took her to her house. Mom really can't be trusted anymore. It kind of scared us. Well, she just turned 80 so I guess it's to be expected.

Sis put the house on the market. It sold in a couple of months. We knew Mom couldn't live alone anymore. That was it. Mom never went back again since "scam" day. Talk about your life changing in a moment.

My sister decided to build an extra room onto the house so Mom could have some privacy. (I think it's more for my sister...just sayin',lol) After 6 months it's finally finished and my mother actually got to "move in" to it just this week. She won't have much time to enjoy it before coming here.

This visit is supposed to last 2 months. Usually her visits are 2 WEEKS and by day 8 or so I am starting the countdown to when the visit is over, lol. But this time......whew....can't start the countdown that early. I don't know what I'm going to do,lol.

Well, they say when one door closes, another opens. It won't be long now before I will HAVE to open the door and there will be my mother wheeling her luggage in and chattering away about the whole SuperShuttle ride to my house and how come the neighbor still has his garbage can out...and why do I still have that half dead plant on the porch and why is the earth round and.....why why this...and how come that....and oh, yes....what was I saying?

Mother is Coming...(OH GOODY!!) See Ya!

It's Hard To Be Nice Nowadays

Sad times we live in. I'm sure someone has said that all through history no matter what generation it was. But now? Sad. Sad. No trust anymore in this world.

I felt this the other day as I was dropping my aunt off at her house a few blocks from me.

There was an elderly lady standing on the corner as we made our way to Auntie Em's house. The lady was going up to cars and it looked like she was asking for a ride. It's not a very busy street but after the car ahead of me stopped I noticed a couple of large shopping bags on the corner. Perhaps the bags got too heavy for her to carry as the grocery is just up the block.

The car ahead of me drove on. I was up next and the lady put up her finger but...what did I do? DROVE ON. Don't think that I didn't feel guilty about this. I felt AWFUL. She could have been my grandmother! She was dressed casually, didn't look like a homeless person or anything. Just normal.

But.....could I TRUST her? I mean, she was right in front of our church there on the corner!! But that doesn't mean anything. She could have been working with some other scam artists, who knows? Gets in the car and pulls a gun out of those shopping bags. Highly unlikely in my neighborhood but STILL......you just never know. Today's world has made it almost impossible to be "nice".

I'm still thinking about that. It's still bothering me. I think of my grandmother who never drove in her life, how she used to take the bus everywhere. She'd have to walk up to the end of her street which was about 1/2 mile long to get to the bus line. As her eyes failed her, she used to carry a blind cane even though she could still see but was legally blind. One day she said these young boys drove by and yelled out "GRAB HER PURSE!!" and went by yucking it up. But it's really not funny. It's just.....sad.

So when I saw that poor lady standing there asking for help, my body tensed with mistrust. That's a terrible way to be! My arms, my heart, should have been open, shouldn't they? But instead we clammed up. My aunt too. It's just horrible and I'm angry about it. Angry at the world and all it's evil people who have made me feel that way over the years. I had to stop watching the news because it was starting to make me feel like not even going outside anymore. Made me feel like triple locking the doors and barring the windows.

But we have to watch out for ourselves and our loved ones safety. I suppose that must come first. And if we do wind up helping someone who "looks" innocent, we could be foolishly putting ourselves in harms way. Just think how quick your life could change just trying to "help" someone out and falling victim to something threatening.

You just never know.

So I guess I'll just have to keep saying "NO". Can I even trust my gut anymore? Can you even trust your feelings?

I'm not sure anymore. And that's really....sad.

Christmas Chaos

Well, another Christmas is upon us. Every year it seems to come sooner, especially as you get older. You kinda start thinking, "how many do I have left?" at a certain point. You start thinking all kinds of things like that after you turn 50. Or maybe before, even. But I really started noticing these thoughts creeping in my mind in the last year or two.

Every year at this time I am conflicted about what to do for my fellow man for the holidays. Give here, give there. Is my money really going to the people or into some charity bigwig's pocket? It's getting very difficult to know who to support these days.  Last Christmas I went to the dollar store and bought 100 kid's gifts for one of our biggest charity's here in Sacramento,Loaves and Fishes. It's a big soup kitchen that serves one hot meal a day plus offers other help for our homeless. They have a school for the children. I brought presents like Jigsaw Puzzles, coloring books, crayons, educational things, nothing junky.

My aunt and I went into the darkest part of downtown to deliver the goods. It was somewhat of an eye opener. Of course I am always aware of the homeless in our city but it's different when you see lines of them all together streaming toward the soup kitchen. TONS of them walking, walking, some with blankets thrown over their shoulders, some on bikes loaded with garbage bags full of recyclables. The eye opening part is that this is going on less than 5 miles from my home. It's like a whole different world then what MY vision of Sacramento has always been.

Cut to last night: Streams and streams of CARS making their way slowly down the blocks of the Fab Forties in East Sac, my neck of the woods. I live just a few blocks from this part of the neighborhood, where Ronald Reagan lived while he was governor of California. I grew up here, know all these houses practically by heart. It turns into a spectacle around Christmas time because everyone puts up lights and somehow the word's gotten round that this is THEE place to go around Christmas. It's a shame, really. I've never gotten caught up in the hoopla but for the past week or so I've been watching a horse get harnessed up to a carriage from my front window in a store's parking lot that I can see from my house. The other night I saw 2 horses clopping by carrying a wagon with sparkling lights. No, I don't live in the country, lol, but it feels like it. I could have walked down to those Fab Forties but it was too chilly so I ventured out last night in the car to see what was going on.

Talk about eye opening. The same streets I used to ride my bike on for hours when I was a kid were now full of cars, horse drawn wagons and carriages, a mini old fire engine carrying people, huge bicycle thingys carrying a dozen or so people, shuttle buses and, gasp!, the kicker for me..LIMOUSINES! All traveling at a snail's pace. People walking in front of you crossing the streets. Cars parked everywhere clogging the streets. Droves of people walking  taking pictures in a ten block area. CHRISTMAS CHAOS in every direction you turn.

And for what? Christmas lights. Oh, yes, they do look pretty. But it's not THAT spectacular. I was underwhelmed, to be honest. Only a couple of the streets have lights hanging overhead from one side of the street to the other and not every house is lighted.

It just all seems so ridiculous to me. And especially when I think of my trip downtown last year and what's going on in those 5 miles from here.

Ah, such is life. Who am I to begrudge someone renting a limo to cruise through and catch some Christmas spirit? I hope they got their money's worth.

It killed some of my spirit, though, to see our neighborhood turned into this brouhaha of excess. And only ONE manger scene I caught a glimpse of among all of this commercialism.

Call me Grinch, lol. My Christmas gift will be giving throughout next year when all this dies down and people still need a hot meal, not just for the holidays. Or I wish I could adopt a family who truly needed a Christmas. I've looked these up online before but it all seems so impersonal. You view families who want IPHONes for Christmas or other expensive doohickeys. I don't even have a cellphone and if you're that poor how are you going to pay to use that phone? I don't get it. What happened to books and puzzles and board games for the kids?

I guess my world is really from another time zone. But that's okay. It may be 2017 out there but in my house it's still around 1987.

Dad, you'd be so proud of me. He began every sentence with "30 years ago we...." and of course, my sister and I would groan. But now I'm just like him. We remember when things were simpler. And what's wrong with simple? Nothing in my book. I think it would do this world a ton of good to quit staring and scrolling on a hand held gadget all day long. Sometimes it makes me wonder what the NEXT 30 years will bring. Perhaps I won't be here by then and that might be a good thing too because I'm not much for change.

And as my mind falters in my old age, I hope last night's images of those endless headlights prowling through the neighborhood gawking at a few Christmas lights are erased and the ones of me riding my bike down those same peaceful streets remain just like it was....30 YEARS AGO :)

Downton Abbey-A Must See!

Okay,okay..I admit I'm late to the game,dahling.

For the past couple of years or so I've heard about Downton Abbey.... but a historical drama? Not really my cup of tea. Boy,was I wrong.

When I noticed that PBS was playing the whole series last week I thought, ah, what the heck, let's give it a look.

My look turned into a stare.

I couldn't stop watching! From the first pulsating scene with that theme song I was hooked. "This is something special", I thought. And couldn't tear my eyes from the screen.

Got about half way through before I got tired of all the telethon breaks on that channel so I just ordered it on DVD so I can watch it in one flowing sweep.

I feel I haven't really "seen" it yet because I put the close captioning on to not miss any words. Some of the accents are thick and when they speak fast it's sometimes difficult to catch every word. It's been such a pleasure to read. The sentences are so poetic.

Oh,parting will be such sweet sorrow when I'm finished watching it. I know I will watch it again. And again. It is probably one of the most brilliant pieces I've ever seen in my life. (And that's  a lot of tv and movies, I can tell you! Big buff here :) The emotions it evokes...wow. I felt I was on the verge of tears during every episode.

For the first time in my life, it makes me want to don a corset.

And run right into the screen with that haunting song playing behind me.

From The Bottom Of My Heart :) Hodi Thanks You Too!

"How can you mend a broken heart?....How can you stop the rain from falling down?..."

The Bee Gees first asked this question in 1971. (I'm asking how can you START the rain falling down in California right now!)

I'm sure this question has been asked since the beginning of time. Once your heart "breaks" does it ever really mend?

"You know hearts were made to be broken..." From another Bee Gees tune.

As I get older it seems more and more things "break my heart". It's not necessarily a bad thing.  Oh, in my younger days of course, my heart was "broken" because of an unrequited love.

Or over a job I wanted and didn't get.

Or experiencing a loved one or pet passing away.

It seems in your more self-absorbed teens and twenties your heart is broken for things about you

But as you age, your heart starts breaking for everyone else.

My heart's always broken for animals in particular.

Whatever I have left in this world will go to charities supporting hunger, abuse, medical aid and adoption for furballs when I die.

In fact just about every penny I earn from my books right now go to animal rescues.

So I want to give a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who buy LottoLaff$ books :) I would like to let you know that you are also helping me to contribute to bettering these little critter's lives.

Here's one I made a contribution for yesterday at the AFRP, one of many rescue groups I give to.

http://www.animalfriendsrescue.org/index.html

If this little guy doesn't break your heart, I don't know what will. Sometimes you just have to wonder why things like this happen to such a beautiful little baby.

But I don't waste too much time these days thinking why.

Now I just wonder WHAT and HOW. What can I do to help. How can I help.

Sometimes it's good for your heart to break a little. Gets you moving. Gets you giving.

Thank You again,everyone!!

Hodi, is an incredibly sweet and playful 2-month-old kitten who was rescued from the streets of South Monterey County. He was suffering from a horrible untreated infection to both eyes, and they were painfully swollen and bulging from their sockets. He was immediately put on medication and pain killers to see if the swelling would go down. Unfortunately, his eyes did not improve and he had to undergo surgery to have both eyes removed to prevent them from rupturing. Currently in foster care, Hodi is feeling great and is learning to map out his environment by using his remaining senses. He's a snuggly, happy and playful little guy who can look forward to enjoying a long and wonderful life, despite being blind. He'll be available for adoption once he has healed. Donations towards his medical expenses are appreciated.

Canned Refried Beans? No Way Jose! Make These!

Don't tell my Italian family (shhhh!) but I tend to enjoy Mexican cuisine a bit more, lol.

Recently I came across this scrumptious recipe for refried beans. And the best part? It's so easy! You'll never buy the cans again after this-- so say "Hasta La Vista,Rosarita!!"

Scrumpdilly-ishish Refried Beans

2 Cans Pinto Beans (I use Trader Joe's Organic)

1 Tbsp Olive Oil

5 green onions, sliced up

1 Tbsp Cumin

2 cloves garlic,minced

1 Tbsp lime juice (Start with a Tsp. I found it was enough for me)

2 Tsp lime zest (I didn't add this but it's to your taste.)

Mash pinto beans with their liquid in a pot with potato masher.

Heat oil and add green onions. Saute for a couple of minutes then add garlic and cumin. Saute 1 minute more.

Stir in beans.

On medium high heat (I used medium and it seemed hot enough) cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring pretty often so they don't get stuck on the bottom. (Mine were bubbling and getting thick even on medium heat so use your judgement :)

You'll start to see them thicken up. The recipe stated to cook for 10 minutes but I found at medium heat it took about 15. Take the pan off the heat when it reaches your desired consistency (some people like them thicker or thinner) and stir in the lime juice. Taste first before adding more. You don't want to end up with a mouth full of lime :)

Enjoy!!
