In that, one cannot be fired without a reason. However, one must still perform at a satisfactory lever if you want to keep your job and avoid administrative action taken against you, which would add extra stress and economic problems. You are granted tenure because you demonstrated that you are worthy of the profession during the probationary period. Sad to say that some slip through the cracks.
