Winner will receive record $50.4 million prize

MOUNT ADAMS, Ohio — A Kentucky man who wishes to remain unidentified won $50.4 million playing the Classic Lotto at a Mount Adams bar, the Ohio Lottery Commission said Tuesday.

It is one of the biggest lottery winnings for the Cincinnati region and a record for the Classic Lotto game, which hasn't had a winner since May 2010, when someone took home $9.5 million.

Jackpots had been piling up in the game since then. The game is only played in Ohio.

The winner bought his ticket at Monk's Cove, 1104 St. Gregory St., a bar that advertises $1 Jell-O shots, Wii games, Guitar Hero and Karaoke on its website.

Bar owner Tom Nurre said few people at his establishment play the Classic Lotto, preferring the larger jackpots of Mega Millions and Powerball. Mega Millions' next jackpot is $57 million and Powerball's is $173 million.

Lottery officials called to notify Monk's Cove owner Tom Nurre about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The bar receives a $1,000 agent sales bonus for selling the top prize winning ticket.

"This is a lot of fun," he said. "It was even more fun when the Lottery told me my share was $100,000 and then they called back and said no, it was $1,000. But it's $1,000 more than when I woke up today."

Prior to this, the biggest win at his bar had been $600 on Keno, Nurre said.

He suspects he knows who might be the winner, but "I won't know until somebody shows up driving a Rolls Royce," he said.

The odds of winning Classic Lotto are 1:13,983,816. Drawings are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The winning numbers were 7-11-13-14-23-42.

Although the jackpot is $50.4 million, it's an annuity that pays out $1.68 million a year over 30 years. Or the winner can choose a one-time cash payment of $25.2 million — minus 25 percent in federal taxes and 6 percent in state taxes for a total of about $17.3 million.

Lottery Commission spokeswoman Danielle Frizzi-Babb said the winner plans to come forward, but he will use a blind trust to protect his identity, a common strategy among lottery winners of $1 million or more.

Since January, Southwest Ohio has had eight six-figure lottery ticket winners, playing a variety of games, and two million-dollar winners. Both the millionaires claimed their funds in a trust.

The region has had larger lottery winnings over the years, including instances in which bad fortune followed good, according to news accounts.

In July 2008, someone bought a Mega Millions ticket in Amelia that won $196 million. Afterward, village officials debated creating an earnings tax to gain some of those winnings.

Someone won a $265 million jackpot in the Cincinnati area in 2006; it was claimed by the WFJ Trust. In 2003, an unidentified person in West Chester claimed a $31 million Super Lotto jackpot and a Lebanon man won $36 million.

In Independence, Mack Wayne Metcalf and his wife split a $65.4 million jackpot, but he was snagged for unpaid child support and for driving under the influence, causing an accident. He and his wife lived apart and died within five years of winning, apparently of natural or unknown causes.

In 1990, Jerome Lyle won $10 million, but his $220,000 home in Avondale was seized four years later after police found more than 200 grams of marijuana in a freezer, marijuana seeds in a refrigerator, several pounds of marijuana in the basement, incubators and 19 marijuana plants. He pleaded guilty to a count of marijuana trafficking and received probation and a suspended sentence. Lyle moved to Hawaii.

Jell-O shots, Wii games and Guitar Hero.

Sounds like a bar that I wouldn't be patronizing.

This winner is a young guy.

Dont you just love his attitude? Could it be that he was the one who hit the big one and all this is just a big ploy to keep a lid on it? hahaha It would be the smartesT thing ever. Looking everywhere else when the winner is right there infront of you. Our local game similar to that game with exact same odds is at $8M jp. Do I play that or the pb? I'll play one of both Jester

I find it interesting how this article talks about the Ohio winners who were identified going on to do bad things.  Though perhaps the anonymous winners might have committed crimes as well and we'll never know.  It's interesting though cuz it gives the idea that the good ones stayed anonymous.  Heh

Somebody won again last night.  That's funny, a lottery goes 17 months before it's won and then have another winner the next drawing.  Probably was someone with a multi-draw ticket that missed winning the $50.4M by one drawing and have to settle for a $1M prize instead.

Yep, absurd duration of time for a 3 draws a week game -- 18 months to win jackpot!  It's negative Ohio Lottery publicity.
