CLAYTON, N.C. — Police arrested a convenience store clerk Thursday after she allegedly told a customer his ticket wasn't a winner, then cashed the $50 winning ticket after the man left the store.
Kathleen Patricia McClusky, 19, of Clayton, was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses. She was working as a clerk at the Kangaroo Station on U.S. 70 in Clayton.
She was taken to the Johnston County jail under $15,000 bond.
The incident occurred Dec. 23 when Luis Flores-Bautista of Clayton gave McClusky two tickets. Police say McClusky told Flores-Bautista the first ticket was a winner and gave him $17. She told him the second ticket wasn't a winner and threw the ticket in trash.
After Flores-Bautista left the store, a friend suggested he retrieve the ticket. He took the ticket to another store where the clerk said the $50 winnings had already been claimed.
Clayton police worked with the store manager and the N.C. Lottery Commission, then charged McClusky with claiming the winnings.
Thanks to Original Bey for the tip.
Now she has a record and a $15,000 bond.....and all of this for $50! Why?
cause she was stupid
I think any clerk who throws your ticket away without your permission should be arrested. When a clerk checks your ticket they should either give you back your ticket or some money and the printout showing the amount it should pay.
Dumb broad. She is going to cost the tax payer several thousand dollars. The proper punishment would be fine her $12,500.
Dumb people make tax payers life harder and harder
In nc they staple the receipt to the ticket and your winnings come up on the register screen. Played a bunch and so far they all have been honest. Stupid girl really screwed up.
And cuz she felt "entitled" to it cuz it's "not fair" that the guy won money and she didn't.
Yea, and ya can't fix stupid.
She probably bragged to freinds that she could spot stupid ppl.
jokes on her, looks like she was practicing by looking in the mirror. LOL
This isn't the first time this has happened. Google the stories of Willis Willis & Robert Sehested to see how pervasive this is. People need to check their tickets themselves, not hand it over to the quickimart clerk to check for them...
I'm sure it happens a LOT and the clerks just don't get caught. Glad this one was.
and no job...
Stupid alright. Here in California ithey put you in jail and if you were the store owner who pulled this stunt, you get all your lotto machines/ scrathers etc removed and your vendor licence is bye bye..
theft and vandalism is rampant where i live. i'm poor due to medical debt and am being backed into a corner by broken windows and slashed tires. unemployed thugs rule the night. just tired of suffering.
They also rip up the ticket after they paid you...At least that's what I've seen them do at various places across the state
They throw away my terminal printed receipt of winnings 100% of the time if I don't ask for it.
Last time I cashed a $20 scratch they tore the bottom portion off and gave me the tickets. I posted it on the winning scratches thread.
Move to Phoenix Jeff, it worked for me 30+ years ago and its still working.
Am I the only one who asks for the receipt?
She would make a great addition to the tv show Shameless.
Roger that......I always check my tickets myself before handing them over....if what I know Ive won and what they say I won differs....I ask for the ticket back and cash it elsewhere...
I ask for the receipt as well.
I usually go to my local grocery where everyone is nice, always smiling, fair, don't have to ask for the receipt, they automatically give everyone there receipts but I had to go to the Texaco station up the street from my home because Krogers closed early for New Years Eve. I regretted doing that, nothing but trouble with the Indian guys who own Texaco, not sure why they act like black people are thieves, guess they watch too much tv, I dunno.
Took my tickets, ripped them up, didn't offer a receipt, shoved my money into my hand, I questioned him about one ticket and he raised his voice, I asked him calmly not to yell at me, the older guy stepped in, I was just saying to the young guy that I made counting error on one of the tickets but he said "I'm not stealing from you" I wasn't accusing him, I was just saying I made a mistake. I will never go there again.
That's the best answer I have ever seen...I agree rdgrnr........and Johnny tell him what he's won!.....an all expense trip to the county seat of his choice"........nice!
I always check my own tickets on line so when I turn in a winner I know exactly what I should be getting back. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this happened much more often to quick pickers as compared to self pickers when turning in non scratch winning tickets.
If the ticket worth 1M i would do it. But 50 wtf...
She deserves to be punished for what she have done. She have cheated the man. Thought its only $50, still what she did is a petty crime...
