NC Powerball winner identifies herself

Powerball

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — A woman from Shallotte, North Carolina, has come forward with what she believes is the winning Powerball ticket from Wednesday's drawing.

A reporter who spoke with 26-year-old Marie Holmes confirms the numbers and date on her ticket match those that were drawn for the $188 million payout.

"I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I saw the ticket and checked it," Holmes explained with a noticeable grin. The mother of four said she screamed after the winning numbers were drawn Wednesday night and ran and told her kids. "They said I scared them," Holmes joked.Holmes said she was forced to quit her jobs at Walmart and McDonald's to care for her children, one of whom has cerebral palsy. She said the first thing she's going to do with the money is tithe because, as she puts it, "I wouldn't have none of it if it wasn't for God."

Holmes also plans to set up college funds for her children and buy a new house after deciding where to move. When asked if she's ready for the impact the lottery win will have on her life, Holmes offered, "I'm ready for it. I'm ready to embrace the change. I'm very grateful for what's about to happen for my family."

Holmes will confer with lawyers and speak to a financial advisor in Raleigh before turning in the ticket to North Carolina lottery officials.

According to the N.C. Education Lottery's twitter page, the ticket is worth $188 million annuity paid over 30 years, or a $127 million lump sum payment before federal and state taxes are withheld. The store is eligible to receive $50,000 retailer incentive award for selling the winning jackpot ticket, according to the NC Education Lottery.

"It's a lucky day to be in North Carolina," said Alice Garland, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. "We look forward to meeting the jackpot winner, but the most important thing for the winner to do today is sign the back of the ticket and secure it in a safe place. This is a life-changing event. The lucky winner should take some time and get sound professional advice before coming in to get the big check."

This will be the fourth time a North Carolina ticket has claimed a Powerball jackpot win.

The jackpot for Wednesday's drawing had climbed to an estimated $564 million. The winning numbers were 11, 13, 25, 39, and 54, with Powerball number 19.

The two other winning tickets were purchased in Puerto Rico and in Texas.

The previous North Carolina record jackpot win was $141.4 million, set in February 2010.

Where are these conspiracy theorists that you're so scared of,  that you constantly post about?  Learn to ignore things!  Sheesh!  No one has been complaining here except the usual ones that complain about people complaining about places that win.  Now that no one is complaining you same ones and new ones are trying to drum up an argument/fight like usual.  You people can't just be happy and leave things be!  Try that so called restraint!

What's with all the explanation marks? Why you find yourself so passionate about this? Should we wear uniforms when we log into LP as well? We must all be of the same mind and thought, I assume. You people? Is this a movement now? You are working yourself up over nothing and clearly have gone off your meds or are bored out of your mind and feel compelled to engage me. Try some chamomile tea. It will help until your courier brings the chemical version of what keeps you normal.

Speak for yourself- not everyone under the age of 30 is dumb with money. This is a Mother first. She had no reason to tell the press that one of her children needs special care- yet here you are " raining down on her parade". Be Truly glad for once. If l am not mistaken, you were one of the person's who shouted from the rooftops " One Winner", if this was to be it, would you have said " Broke in 12 years?"

Your pessimism is astounding- If no one has said this to you before" You truly are a piece of work"

That was your First thought? Think on this- In 2013- an Engineer from Minn who was a winner of a either the MM or PB jackpot came forward in hours, or the very next day and people were also surprised, by all accounts things have turned out well for him. I don't recall anyone making mention of him going " Broke". Be happy for people who win, l would hate to think that people would be saying the same about you had you won.

These kinds of remarks could very well draw people to think they made because of Race. Live and let live.

Congrats to her! Her winnings will certainly help the local economy. And yes, I'm shocked that the winner is 26 years old. I was convinced they'd be at least 62 years old! After all, Brunswick County (where the ticket was bought) is home to a high number of retirees.

I guess I will be sending the tickets to a friend in FL so she can cash them for me. I bought a total 27 tickets so I came out ok.

Good luck to the 26 year old mother and hope she gets competent advice.

Not sure if she is with the father of her children but she apparently has custody of her children. Chances are the father(s) are not involved with the children as she lives with her mother.

She doesn't have to worry about working at Wal-Mart or Mcdonalds ever again. I just hope she relocates to a guard gated neighborhood preferably out of state to raise her children.

26 years old, works at Walmart and has 4 kids. That money is as good as gone. After her friends, boyfriends and family, the church, lawyers and financial experts are done with her she'll be lucky if she has $50,000 left to her name when this is all done. When you win a certain amount of money your previous financial circumstances should really be evaluated a mandatory percentage of the money should be placed into an account that you can't touch for X amount of years and distributed gradually for your protection. This goes for pro-athletes also. You can't hand someone that was making $8/hr tens of millions of dollars in one fell swoop, like a monkey a loaded gun. The ones too that are eager to come forward right away and let everyone know they one as opposed to taking their time, setting things up and trying to remain anonymous are the ones usually prone to disaster. This is going to be a real sad story down the road.

Tithing is the biggest scam in the world, and her church will milk her dry.   Now that she has money, that church will make her feel guilty if she doesn't give at least 50 percent to them.

The other 50 percent will be pissed away by these financial "advisors" who love to take advantage of financially ignorant people.

If she stays in her hometown and is unable to find a trustworthy tax attorney/CPA/advisor then perhaps your scenario will play out. On the other hand, if she is able to get away and start a new life in a different state then I feel there is hope for her. She needs to get away from Shallotte, NC as soon as she can or the vultures will prey on her.

As of today, her as well as her family are no longer safe. I hope she can go to a bank and get a cash advance and leave town as soon as she can. That also means yanking her children out of school.

Tithing is the biggest scam in the world, and her church will milk her dry.   Now that she has money, that church will make her feel guilty if she doesn't give at least 50 percent to them.

The other 50 percent will be pissed away by these financial "advisors" who love to take advantage of financially ignorant people.

She'll be back at Mickey D's within two years, and I will bet any amount of money on that.

The three reverends in my neighborhood that live in million dollar homes and drive Mercedes, Jaguars and BMWs would like you to kindly keep your thoughts to yourself. I can't decide if they are the bigger con artists or the guy that runs some charity that has an expensive house also as well as 3 cars that cost over $100,000. No Nod

" This is going to be a sad story down the road?" You know this how, by guessing?

By the way have you ever collected $80 mil after taxes? Are you a financial adviser who has looked into past clients habits and see the same in this woman's financial history and now feel that you in a position to come up with these gems of foresight?

* How would you like reading your post if you won that money and others said that about you?

Know  what Louie- you ought to take the earliest flight to her city, ask her for a one on one discussion to " alert" her of the Perils that await. I mean dude, look into the whites of her eyes and even if you have to shed a tear in your conviction, let her know you truly concerned about her & the kids..that should win her over..

So because she's a Christian and is obedient she is ignorant???? WOW!!!! What makes her ignorant because she decided to tithe and consult an attorney and adviser like most winners do? I don't know why you are calling this woman names all because she decided to go public like many other winners have done. Yes she should of waited but she didn't so get over it hopefully her attorney has advised her of such anonymity.

Malachi 3:10 New International Version

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

What if...just what if her Church "took her in" when she had no one to turn to. What if they showed great love for her and her family, providing food & other necessary things. Love compels us to return the favor- we know squat on how her church reached out to her etc etc. If she feels she needs to tithe- she could make a  $5 mil donation and still good about herself.

Others shove their millions up their noses and no one cares..yet just you give to your Church or place of Worship....

I really don't know what your problem is? There have been winners that have went public in the beginning and disappeared out of the media after receiving their winnings. Chris Shaw won the Powerball in 2010 he came forward the next day and he seems to be doing ok. Paul White came forward within days he won it 2013 so far so good. Ira Curry won the Mega Million is 2013 and she went public before she cashed her ticket so far so good. Dave Honeywell won the Powerball in 2013 8 days later he and his family went to the location where he bought the tickets to receive the ceremonial check so far so good. and lets not forget Lottery Post favorite winner Pedro Quezada he also went public so far so good.

No one knows what the futures holds for this woman(except that she has millions in the bank) why don't you hope that she does the right thing with her financial blessing. As a Christian Conservative I wish her and her family the best.

Well said noise-gate. My mother was an Evangelist she ministered to everyone she didn't care what color they were if you were in need she was there. My siblings and I would come home and there would be people eating/sleeping on our couches and pallets on the floor because of my mother opening her heart and house to people. When my mother passed away there was so many people of all colors at her funeral and they all spoke and said she was there for them when they had nothing.

Your mother was a true Christian and a better person than me. You were fortunate to have a person like her to be your mother.

We ALL wanted to have that feeling, to be 'shocked', to be relieved, to be ecstatic, even overwhelmed. Please stop with all the hating and mean spirited comments. Would I have come forward so quickly?, no but more so because i have so many issues i would need to clean up before. So good on her, go get that money girl!! Go get that money!!! ITS YOURS!!!!!

WAY TO GO Young Lady!!! Now go LIVE IT UP!!!! Be smart and careful and remember to ENJOY!! ENJOY!!! ENJOY!!! ENJOY!!!

I was glad to see someone win that truly needed the money. If she is meeting with an advisor and attorney she will be ok, if she listens to them and can stay away from the bloodsuckers.

And for those that think she's wrong for giving money to her church, not all churches are megachurches, and not all preachers are bad. Just like not all people of any particular profession are bad. But... some people just like to stereotype because they don't know any better.

And the truth is how many of us would have ever bother to pick numbers like, 11-13-25-39-54, and PB-19? Personally, it would not have occurred to me to have even consider using those numbers as I always felt that the selected numbers would be larger than the ones drawn. It goes to show that it pays to follow certain pattern of numbers and combine a few of them with your own numbers...

I Agree! Tithing is a BIG SCAM!!

Jack Whittaker tithed to his church and everybody knows what happened to Jack!

Pastor Rick Warren practiced "reverse tithing" giving away 90% of his income, had

to ask his members for donations because his church was in a $900,000 deficit , even

though he has sold millions of copies of his book.

2 Corinthians 9:7
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver!!!

The scripture says that's your choice. whatever you prefer. It’s up to you!!

Pretty straightforward, isn’t itYes Nod The above verse is the total opposite of tithing!

You know why those Pimp Preachers don't want you to give what your heart decided?

Because you may have it in your heart to give $1 lol

Cussing Face"Give 10% of your money or you are robbing God.”

"Give 10% or you'll be cursed with a curse"

Do you know what is called when your forced to give money under threats?

It's called extortion!!!

Debbie downers , I hope the best for her and her children.

You guys love to act like you have everything figure out but once you have that winning ticket in your hand you don't know what you will really do. Because imagining and experiencing are very different things.

Maybe she will spend all the money , but is her money to spend.

I don't believe in tithe , we don't know her or how she has benefited from the church.  She has a child with special needs who probably needs constant care and maybe the church has helped her with the care , while some church spend their money in funding the pastors lifestyle and mega church some do have a compromise with their community and use the tithe to help the congregation and not them.

One of my first rule of analyzing a church is to check how the pastor lives compared to their congregation , if your pastor is living in luxury while the congregation is struggling to live that's a church that I wont attend.

Wow, some these comments are just so judgmental. What happen to being happy for others? Or is it that some of you are mad cause you did not win. I mean if you can try to predict how many years she will go broke, then how come you couldn't predict the numbers to win your share of the pot?

Congratulations Marie! You are in a position to not only be a blessing to your family and friends, to many. God bless you!!!

Donnie, I truly believe everyone on this site is very happy for this young woman and especially because of her personal situation, the win will set her/children up for life. That is a true blessing and I wish her the utmost success.
What key indicators for me indicate concern for her future are her past choices in life over the last 6-8 years(since turning 18). As we all know having 4 children by the time you are 26 is a HUGE challenge along with one of them being a special needs child. Next, with places of employment mentioned, it doesn't give much reassurance in financial earnings to having an average life, let alone to provide for 4 children(No knock on the effort..she gets an A for that). No mention of a spouse/significant other in the picture at all. We all know it takes the effort of 2 parents with complete dedication towards those 4 children and their development.... Not 1 or 2 children....FOUR !!!
And last of all..the idea to come forward AND have your picture taken....That one sends up a red flag most of all because it's going to put any and every friend or POS that she ever had dealings with come knockin' on her door for a handout.
While I pray she has a strong parent(s) and great financial and legal help, the above mentioned facts makes ME pause and say,"Hmmmm, there's concern for pitfalls".
As far as making a judgement ? It comes with the right to free speech and the life's experiences. Opinions vary on any topic. To say that folks are so judgemental...of course we are... we are human beings with lives and "Judgements" are made every day... We vote and make a judgement on legal issues or a candidate(s) or a leader we want. We drive cars and make a judgement on the type/color of vehicle we drive.Do I want to buy a house or build a new one? it's a judgement call based on my opinion and life's experiences. We eat food and make a judgement on the type of food we eat or at what restaurant we eat it at. We work in a particular industry and make judgements on that or the boss we work for. We purchase products and make choices to be around people every day.... Am I to only make judgements that appeal to certain people's ideals???...NO, and I never will because I live in a country that gives me opportunity to make a judgement....but that's me and my freedom of choice... I wish you much success in your choices/judgements.Especially when it comes to your lottery earnings.

The statement that was raised was about Lottery winners losing " More"... in this case MORE than Ms Holmes $80 mil plus singular jackpot win... you Only got ONE person on your so called list Jack Whittaker who qualifies. You attempting to Combine all the other lower lottery wins.. that was not the point of my Challenge. This Forum is about them, and none other. I could have easily added Bernie Madoff, even Larry Ellison  ( founder of Oracle) and others whose fortunes have taken a dive and risen from time to time.

I used the sports figures as a comparison only because the chances of them being born out of billions of people on the planet and getting to that pinnacle, along with the financial loss. That's all...

Wow!, just Wow!! I really am having a hard time understanding what I'm reading here in some of these posts, especially in a forum such as this. Everyone of us has this dream, probably even more so than others since we sign on/create accounts and post in a lottery forum. One in which we share ideas, dreams, and humour, all with our fingers crossed hoping to hit it big one day. As we witness this new journey this young woman and those around around her are about to embark on, why not write messages of encouragement, hope, congratulations, and advice for her. Who knows, she might log unto the Internet to search for 'past lottery winners' and stumble upon this site (that's how i found it). Why is there so much vitriol towards someone who represents and is embracing in this very moment, the one thing all of us on here want, dream of, even crave for? I am amazed and truly disappointed, never expected this in a forum as this. On yahoo and other comment sections yes, i expect it there. Not Here. ENOUGH!!!

Hearsetax, don't send me private message harassing me. Have the balls to post what you want in the public thread where i posted my opinion.  If you feel alluded or insulted by my previous comment that's your problem , don't bother contacting me again.

You are a loser and will probably remain that way for the rest of your life.

Congrats to Marie and family.

I think one way we could help her here is by collecting some advice for her in case she happens to stumble on the site. I'll start the ball rolling here:

Q: If I should win a large top prize, do I have the option of remaining anonymous with regard to the media and the public?

A: The NCEL will consider a winner’s name, city/county, and the prize amount a matter of public record, unless the winner produces a valid protective order or Address Confidentiality Program authorization card.

This is going to be a real sad story down the road.

did u mistakenly leave out that she was Black....????

xmasbaby's avatarxmasbaby

This post is soooo disrespectful.  What does Black have to do with it? Here we go with " racist " posting... In my humble opinion, it's her money and she can spend it any kind of way she wants and it's none of my nor your business. She doesn't need to have her money rationed.

Whether it was an EBT card that bought the ticket or not, she works two jobs and they take taxes from her also, just as any one else so enough with all the condemning. No one tells you how to run your household, so who are you to tell someone who can spend there money one a timely basis.  It's hers and she can do as she pleases. We all come to this site with hopes and dreams to win money, now it has happened to her.  She is 24, BLACK with four children and does works, bought her own ticket, what's your problem? You didn't win... Sounds like your hating on her... Don't judge....or condemn. Get over it and buy you a set of winning numbers cause she set for life.  I'm truly happy for anyone who is getting ahead in this lifetime. No need to tear anyone down regardless of nationality.  That's so wrong.

Very good points, Nikkicute.  I'm in agreement with you.  Church is not a Social Club of some kind with required monthly dues.  God owns the entire universe.  The money this gal won is hers to do with as she pleases.  I just hope she doesn't fall victim to "Guilt-giving" in her church.  Guilt-giving is a sin and so is putting pressure on such a person to give.  Like you said, it's extortion.  I hope she makes no promises to anyone for six months.  That'll give her time to adjust to her windfall.  Then she can make the command decisions on how to deploy her winnings.

Yes, unwise indeed.  Turn in the ticket first!  Then open your mouth if you must.  Almost reminds me of that movie "Lottery Ticket "where the winner had to survive a weekend before he could turn in the winning ticket.  He opened his mouth too soon and got beat-up by a mob of neighborhood jerks. No No

justAndy1970

Good for her. I do hope she, and her attorney have now placed that winning ticket in a safe deposit box, until it is claimed at the lottery center. More to the point, i hope she has sighed that ticket!!!! It is a bearer instrument!

For the nay Sayers and negative types out there, she won, me and you did NOT win it. Even if she puts money in family and friends hands and 10% to God's church, the amount she has left will still be considerable, think about it, She could spend a million dollars a year for the next 90 years, after giving most of it away!

Scratch$'s avatarScratch$

I don't believe the NC Lottery website has named her as the winner yet, so she apparently hasn't redeemed the ticket.

Congrats and Good Luck to her, this money should literally last her the rest of her life.

I just hope that she puts some money away for her kids, a trust fund or something that she

can't touch no matter what, being 26 years old with four kids she's already made some bad

The only people she is in danger of is her own family. When you win lots of money or a few thousands your family will always beat the general public in having  their hands out. Forget anonymity your family will be the ones who will endanger your life and drive you nuts, the general public will forget about you in 2 weeks
