Boyfriend of NC's $188M Powerball winner gets prison for heroin trafficking

After the Big Win

At least she won't have to bail him out again anytime soon

By Todd Northrop

BOLIVIA, N.C. — The boyfriend of North Carolina's biggest Powerball winner will spend time in prison and pay a hefty fine as part of a plea agreement in a drug case.

Lamarr McDow, the 32-year-old boyfriend of $188 million Powerball winner Marie Holmes, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to traffic heroin in a Brunswick County, North Carolina, court Wednesday.

McDow, who also goes by the name "Hot Sauce", was sentenced as part of a plea agreement to a minimum of 7.5 years in prison, and must pay a $100,000 fine. He faces a maximum of 10 years.

McDow is the boyfriend of Marie Holmes, who won $188 million in a February 2015 Powerball drawing. Hot Sauce was arrested in November 2014 on charges including heroin trafficking and conspiracy.

Prosecutors allege McDow took a trip to New Jersey for the purpose of trafficking drugs. Law enforcement officials said they recovered thousands of bags of heroin during investigations alleged to involve McDow.

Since Holmes' win, McDow has been released from jail four times after being held on multimillion-dollar bonds. The first happened in March 2015, when a $3 million bond was met on the original heroin charges.

McDow was arrested again during a July raid at the couple's home on a charge of violating conditions of his pretrial release. He was released in August when a $6 million bond was met. Holmes was cited for drug possession in the raid, which investigators said also uncovered drugs and weapons at the home.

In December, McDow was jailed under a $12 million bond following his arrest on charges of conspiring to arrange a street race and again violating his pretrial release. He was released after the bond was met in early January. (See N.C. lottery winner bails out convict fiancé fourth time, Lottery Post, Jan. 4, 2016.)

Judge Richard brown heard McDow's plea Wednesday.

Imbecile has an imbecile girlfriend with $100 million who I assume gives him anything he wants but imbecile still goes out and sells drugs. WTF? I would say the best thing for her would be for them to lock him up for as long as possible but she's an imbecile and will just go find another guy like him who may be even worse. Sigh. Of all the people to win the lottery and a massive jackpot like that, it had to be someone like her.

ThudFinally, Brunswick county NC will stop bleeding the poor girl of her money..

When I say poor, I don't mean wealth wise. She still has plenty for others to try to bleed out of her...

Eeklike her Pastor!!!

Marie Holmes thinks she knows what she is doing. Will she spend a small amount on legal, financial, and mental health care advice? For her family. She needs the right kind of help. She can afford it today before she blows through her prize.

Her win should last until she passes on and then continue for her children's lives.

A winner's family, friends, and herself will be her downfall if she is not careful.

Bleudog101

She'll pay the $100K fine no doubt.  He'll get paroled in no time, not 7.5 years as I don't believe this is a Federal prison.  Since it involved another state he could face Federal charges as well, though the way things are nowadays I seriously doubt it.

She's counting down the days until this bottom feeder is released.  Can't win (or haven't so far) the big lottery, but I can guarantee she'll take him back.  Her self-esteem is in the gutter.

Man, you don't know how mad this whole situation makes me.

He could have had anything he wanted.
With a woman with kids, and a hundred million dollars.

Now, the big dudes in jail are going to be making fun of him,
for giving up what he had.

He may have wished he asked the Judge for lethal injection.

He's sick, as is his woman. The kids are not faring any better.
What are the kids going to reflect on?  That their Mom's boyfriend is a drug dealer and jail magnet?

When will she wake up?

She won $188 million, if she wanted to move away from him and not be with him, she would have done so the day she won the lottery. It's pretty clear she wants to be with this loser until the bitter end. The millions she's spent on bailing this criminal out shows that clearly enough.

Didn't this girl have any parents to teach her what's right and wrong?

I mean how difficult is it to figure out that North Carolina is not the place for her - with all its heat and humidity?

Only when she wakes up, and finds herself in a new situation, like some place in California, it'll all start making sense.

But she refuses to change the present costly and degrading lifestyle and situation. Maybe it's a black thing?

Guys relax I think she got $88 million in cash and she only spent like $10 million for her beloved husband....So she still has plenty left and I am pretty sure she invested something from that already and making money she can't be that stupid

lol, she "only" spent $10 million on her boyfriend?  Lottery winners who think like that will lose it all pretty fast.

Rich people who still treat money like it's valuable will continue to stay rich.  Those who suddenly think they no longer have to worry about the value of money are doomed to lose it.

ugh Groppo!!!! You pulled the race card and are suggesting its a "Black" thing?  How many black people do you know who won the Powerball lottery and have gotten themselves in this situation?  People of ALL races have done ridiculous things all for the sake of love.  This situation is sad,  regardless of the race of the interested parties.   We've all said "Oh, I would never do this or that".  Its easy to judge others situations when you are on the surface and don't truly know the full details.

In spite of the fact the guy seems like a bad person because he chose the make money in the 'life', none of us know how he held her down  BEFORE she became rich or what drove him to that path.  One thing is for certain.  The plight of the the black man/woman is one of the most difficult and misunderstood ones out there right now and I am sick of people putting us down without understand those challenges.  AND yes Groppo that is a BLACK thing.

Did anyone consider this-When she had nothing  before, HE was the only one there for her and stayed with her in spite of her being poor.  Now she has money, she is supposed to dump him?  Did he start dealing AFTER she won the lottery?  I don't know but I suspect not.  If she is loyal to him and stayed with him after she won, I have respect for that, regardless of how much it cost her or if its not in-line with society's mainstream value system.

Im just giving another side to it.  I would like to think I would have dumped the guy, saved myself millions of dollars and moved on with my life.  But thats my life.  NONE of us know truly why she choose to stay and keep bailing him out.  Please lets not be so quick to call her stupid and judge.  We dont know the whole story, just the one the media choses to cover.

Have you noticed that the only time these types of lottery winners see the light is when all the money is gone?

If you take a look at Sharon Tirabassi, Michael Carrol and Callie Rogers, none of them wised up until all they were bankrupt. Then and only then did the light bulb click on. Right now, the only thing working in Marie's favor is that she won such a large sum. She actually has a chance of coming to her senses before everything is gone. Otherwise, we'll have to wait for her to lose it all before that moment of clarity knocks her on the head.

It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. You seem very intelligent. I think that people often take things too seriously. When he asked, "Maybe it's a black thing?", I immediately thought back to the eighties, when many blacks wore t-shirts with the slogan, "Maybe it's a black thing. You wouldn't understand."

Perhaps that's what inspired him to ask, "Maybe it's a black thing?", because no logical thinking person could understand.

About your being "fed up with people using the rapper excuse to downplay someone else's bigotry", well I don't believe he is a bigot. In this society of different races, genders, and nationalities, we need to be more flexible and stop expecting everyone to be perfect. I am well aware of the history of blacks and natives in this country and I know what MILLIONS of blacks and natives are going through today, but that doesn't excuse the self destructive behavior of black people, such as mass producing illegitimate children half raised in homes without fathers that grow up to commit the majority of violent black on black crime.

Bad  women are made for bad men- state your source?  According to the Good Book, Only one woman was truly made for a man, and that was Eve.Not my words but those that are written..

My "source" is life itself. Good women tend to stay away from bad men because they have nothing in common, whereas two bad people have a lot to talk about.

ThudFinally, Brunswick county NC will stop bleeding the poor girl of her money..

When I say poor, I don't mean wealth wise. She still has plenty for others to try to bleed out of her...

Eeklike her Pastor!!!

I Agree!, Litebets27, isn't it fascinating that North Carolina's judicial or prison system is so backed up that it took almost 1.5 years for this man (who never hid/fled, forfited any of his 3 bail bonds) to receive his sentence?

That's a lot of time to eat up people who care about the individual's money in lawyer fees and court fees! That is unfair.  Isn't it time for North Carolina (and any other state within this country) to set a goal to dole out its sentences within 11 months?

BS

Agreed.

Hard to decide which one of them is dumber. He plays her for the fool.  With every print of her name someone will look to cash in on her money.  All it will take is a sob story .

You know,

The one thing about her is that North Carolina didn't force her to pay his bail all those times.

I could understand how she might want to one time, but geez, at some point she needs to say enough with throwing my money away.

I have heard of the saying " birds of a feather flock together"- but your "  life itself  " statement is nothing short of being resplendent . I could have sworn l heard an angel sing...

Don't you recognize TRUE love when you see it...

I for one, do indeed.

But rather than seeing something ridiculous as this story making 'front page news', I'd rather see her bragging to the media about the couple millions she donated to this or that children's hospitals.   (ie: St. Jude's; Shriners)

It would be wonderful if more people with obscene amounts of money did things like that, those organizations do a lot of good for people that need a lot of help.

The last time McDow was arrested, it had been reported Holmes used a bail bondsman.   I never read how much she was charged, but I did read that in N. Carolina up to 15% of the bond can be required.  That part - whatever she paid the bail agency-  wasn't returned.

Also, in your other post you complained about how slowly it took for him to receive his sentence;  I don't know for sure, but that very well might have been McDow's lawyers dragging things out by negotiating that plea deal.  His sentence might sound harsh, but he actually got a pretty good deal because he could have been sentenced from 18-23 yrs. with a half-million dollar fine and depending upon his past criminal convictions, he might have been classified as a "habitual felon" which carries an even longer sentence, sometimes a life term.

I mean to say that, for her, it would have been better if instead of the news of her and her boyfriend's issues, that she had never been in that situation, and instead made news by donating to those two hospitals.  I'll continue reading whatever news is put up on lotterypost.

Well, I, as a non-white person, have a big issue with his comment. It was deliberate and it definitely wasn't a joke.

Whether he was simply race-baiting or it was written because he actually believes that his statement was logical, it still isn't funny. How many hundreds of pages on LP have been dedicated to discussing the stupidity of many lottery winners, and most of the people being discussed aren't black. Anyone with an IQ above a double digit would know that stupid lottery winners aren't a white or black issue.

Cherry picking one person just to insult an entire group of people IS racist, made even more so because it was so unnecessary. And frankly, I'm a little fed up with people using the rapper excuse to downplay someone else's bigotry.

After further information, I see that you were right about him.

My apologies.

Marie has complete power over this situation. If she continue to be Hot Sauce's
main support system. The in mate are going to use him to get to her &
her family. She between a rock & hard place right now. The crooks in jail
need Hot Sauce to live to continue to bleed Marie dry of cash: The more
she give the big the demands will come. Now, the minute she stops giving
in to the demands. They send her a message . Say good bye to one of her
family members. Act like you don't understand the message there go's
family member# 2..etc...That why I said , IT time to move on. Move herself
& her children out of the way. Threats of all kinds will start coming her way. She need to wise up quickly. Leave this life style behind.

Sigh. Of all the people to win the lottery and a massive jackpot like that, it had to be someone like her.

lol, she "only" spent $10 million on her boyfriend?  Lottery winners who think like that will lose it all pretty fast.

Rich people who still treat money like it's valuable will continue to stay rich.  Those who suddenly think they no longer have to worry about the value of money are doomed to lose it.

I agree that thinking in terms of "only $10 million" when deciding to spend your money could be an indication of a problem, but how much a lottery winner spends isn't the important factor in going broke. It's how much they don't spend that matters. As long as you set aside some minimum amount that should ensure a comfortable lifestyle for the rest of your life you won't go broke regardless of how you view the rest of the money.
