8th-largest cash value in US history
By Todd Northrop
This week Powerball will be the hot ticket, featuring a lump-sum cash payout of nearly $300 million.
The new high-water mark of $422 million for the current Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was achieved after no winning tickets were sold for Saturday night's $391.1 million grand prize.
The lump-sum cash payout value of Wednesday's Powerball jackpot is $290 million — the 8th-largest ever recorded in United States lottery history. (See top 25 annuity and cash values below.)
Players looking to calculate what they would receive after the initial federal and state tax withholdings can find it all pre-calculated for each Powerball jurisdiction on the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega, a web site devoted to the Powerball and Mega Millions multi-state lottery games.
Pennsylvania players can mourn the loss of their state tax-free status, since Pennsylvania just made lottery prizes subject to the state's 3.07% income tax rate. (See Pennsylvania lottery winners now subject to state tax on prizes, Lottery Post, Jul. 20, 2016.)
The largest Powerball jackpot ever awarded was on January 13, 2016, when three tickets from California, Florida, and Tennessee shared a $1.6 billion grand prize. The Florida and Tennessee winners claimed their prizes quickly, but the California winner waited until last week to claim their share.
Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs. For example, the original estimate for Saturday's drawing was $390 million, but by the time all the proceeds were counted just before draw-time, the jackpot had swelled to $391.1 million.
Wednesday's mammoth prize is the result of 22 consecutive draws without a winner. The run-up started as a $40 million prize on May 11.
The winning numbers for Saturday, July 23, 2016 were 5, 7, 23, 35, and 39, with Powerball number 11. The Power Play number was 2.
In addition to the jackpot going unclaimed, the first five numbers were too challenging for even one ticket to match, so nobody won the second prize of $1 million.
The California prize pool for second prize was $1,160,469 this drawing, which would have been split by any players matching all five numbers in that state. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.
43 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 5 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 4 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $21,915 this drawing.
Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts.
Following the Saturday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $30.9 million from its previous amount of $391.1 million. The cash value was raised by $19.7 million from its previous amount of $271.3 million.
The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.
When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, second-prize winners have their prizes automatically doubled to $2 million, while all other non-jackpot prizes are multiplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. All prize payout amounts, including Power Play multipied prizes, can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts page at Lottery Post.
Powerball is now played in 44 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.
Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com). The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.
Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time
Wednesday's Powerball jackpot currently stands tied for the 11th-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States. That position may rise before the drawing Wednesday night, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

I want to win so I can say.....
Win (any amount) or lose, I'm still keeping my job.
Well now the JP should finally get some attention... Here we go
I'm ready Already!
One Ticket ........ One Winner!
$$$$$$
And again, no 2nd prize winner. There's something wrong with that!
JPs at this level should see more 2nd place winners... All that hype with the the matrix changes for both games and it's not happening consistently enough IMO.
time to toss away another $2 - 4 dollars into the green hole of no return
There was 24 million less tickets sold than when MM had a advertised $390 million jackpot (33,723,893 PB and 57,727,651 MM). But mathematically there should be at least two 5 + 0 winners.
I am surprised it only rose by $1 million before the draw.
At 23 draws to get just break the $400 million mark....people have really set their thresholds high before they jump in. Clearly that pocket trauma from the Jan 13th draw is still very fresh and raw for many (including myself)
Looking forward to sticking it to them at work....why work for others when you can be your own darn boss!!!!!
Your odds of hitting the jackpot are the same no matter how high or low the jackpot is.
I want it!
Me too!!!!!
WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO
For last night's sales, 5% of the time there will be no 5+0 winner.
I am not ready to hop aboard the hype train yet. We're barely entering the 80th percentile and I am thinking it will be another 10 rollovers or so before I am interested. Greedy me
With no really high white ball numbers I thought there might be at least one jackpot winner and several 2nd prize winners. Strange times we're living in indeed.
Any bets on if it will hit 500 million by next drawing?
Following the TN winners advice are we D. How original how wonderful.
In addition to quitting work and enjoying life, I think some should be given to deserving charities.
The recent killing of the police officers here in Baton Rouge has inspired me if I win, I will give $1million to each of the funds set up for those officers' surviving families. I will also give to other organizations that help the families of fallen police officers.
These are troubled times we live in and the police are the thin blue line between order and anarchy.
Not trying to preach, just stating my view.
I wish everyone who is playing good luck.
On further consideration: A single or two way split. I could live off $200 mil. No problem.
That is truly a noble cause PrisonerSix.
Good luck this week!
What am I going to do with $175 million dollars? Answer: Anything I darn well please. Within the law of course.
inspiring post PrisonerSix
has entertained the thought of donating the dozen purposely refurbished crown vics to the local PD here in VA
Thanks to NYC being the highest tax around, I would end up with about $151.3 mil before splitting with my brother. I could survive on 75 mil
Man I play every drawing regardless of how big or small it is. I'll split it with like 7people, for a drawing this big I don't care. Would love at least a 3 mill win. Anything over that and it's just icing on cake. That's why I play every drawing. Any jackpot is good to me.
No, it won't get anywhere close. it'll take atleast 2 more draws before it gets above 500
I doubt we we see any acceleration until it gets to at least 650 million....even then, people may just wait until 800 million dollars.
I am sure that we are all waiting for a Lottery Post member winning the jackpot.
Good luck to all players!
Me Too! $$$$$$
Here in PA it will a little less at about $173,000,000
I'm able to buy tickets in a "Can't lose" state where I'm vacationing so this is exciting!
I hope your "Can't lose" State gives you the jackpot. Enjoy your vacation and tell us all about it when you get back. Especially when you win
I would like to thank our fearless leader Todd Northrop for placing this post.
I am sure that we will continue to see interesting threads till Wednesday night and beyond.
Thanks, I'm hoping for the JP of course, I've paid my dues so to say lol. No matter what I'm guaranteed $4 at least tho.
Thank you. We've had 2 funerals in the past 2 days and another tomorrow. Those officers all left behind wives and children, one being a new father. It's really very sad. I will be going out to get a newspaper soon, and will pick up my tickets then.
Sounds like someone purchased 26 tickets. One with each of the 26 Powerballs on it.
Only way to guarantee $4 win
Glad I've inspired someone today. I wish you good luck in the next drawing as well.
What a nice friendly thread!
Screw powerball. I'd done with that pos game forever. If I'm going to throw money away, it might as well be one buck per draw instead of two.
Are you giving up?.....don't.
The next draw might very well be you!!!!!
Best post by far. Truly reflects the pure unadulterated sentiments of genuine lottery players. Good Job.
Looks like someone just took out the political trash. Bravo!
The Chief bottle washer just washed this thread. THANKS CHIEF
I just got my ticket at circle k here in oregon come on million dollar winner.-weshar75
My "Job" is taking care of my child while another one is en route. Not giving up my job whether I win $4 or $1 billion.
The Powerball jackpot right now is $422 million. It has a way to go, to beat that Powerball jackpot of $1.6 billion, on January 13th. Will it get that high again? I remember that day, on January 13th, many people were waiting in long lines, out the door, to purchase their Powerball lottery tickets. Bring it on, another record breaking Powerball game.
l misunderstood your definition of the " job" in your earlier post D. There are few times when l do get blindsided, you got me good. l salute you- you handed me my lunch - the earthly King got handed his too.
Do you think they'll increase the jackpot before Wednesday?
Thank you!
I hope so!
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Probably not, though i suspect when the drawing happens the annuity will leap frog into 10th place or maybe even 9th.
It could get that high. The last MM run rolled 34 times before the jackpot was run. This PB run has rolled 22 times, with the lower sales volume than that billion dollar run had at this point it could happen again, but it's certainly going to take a bit longer this time around.
Not my intention to blindside you. Just wanted to clarify my current position as I was in the work force prior to being promoted to a full-time mom.
I would be surprised. There has been no excitement concerning the current jackpot at least that is what I am observing at different lottery retailers.
No, count me out. I'm thinking more like $465 million, it is creeping along too slowly.
With the DNC this week, and all the other news that will happen (olympics, scandal, sports, people being crazy, etc) I will be surprised to see a report on PB on the news or anywhere for that matter. Maybe Yahoo but that's it. Because of that, it may get raised by 5-10 mil, but thats about it.
Power ball has a $10 Million minimum for increases so it MUST get raised by atleast $10 Million. You're thinking of Mega Millions which has a $5 Million minimum.
Certainly Good Morning America will have a newsscroll about the jackpot tomorrow. They did last week.
This PB jackpot will be won this week.
I bet you say the same thing every week!
Sounds like it was ordered from a catalog....
Enjoy your children now since they grow up so fast looking back
You have a very important job #MOM
Congrats!
No l don't.
Here's something to think of using your own signature MM- yours says " When l win..." When do you expect that to be? Would you be overjoyed if you won This week? Would you contact me and say " you called it?"
$422 Million
Good Luck People
Yes!
from the stork this is close as we got here.
I would contact you and let you know you called it.
From your lips to the lottery's hears
I would be more than "overjoyed"
Mea culpa....no news scroll on Good Morning America today about Powerball.
Winning a Huge Jackpot is about Choices! Some of those short term choices may change over the long term and vice versa!
what choices are you yapping about exactly. clarify. the first choice would be to give as much of it away as you can. otherwise it will be an albatross hanging over your head. keep more than enough for yourself but trusting one of those fraudulent money managers who will tell you a year from now "we invested it in european oil futures or was it asian oil futures i'll check and get back to you". you won't hear from them of course and now you can't sleep nights. or they will say, "we lent it to iran so they could advance their nuclear program, they promised us 8% so we couldn't pass that up". then you say, "i'm not sure i feel safe with my money in their hands, can you cash it out" answer: no, in order to get the 8% we had to sign a long term agreement. you're stuck for at least 12 more years with them. so be careful what you wish for. truth is no one would know what to do with it and feel safe.
Good. See, there is a method to my madness.
Have a Great day.
Here in America, wealthy families have their own personal wealth managers.
Before you hire that person or a team you have to do your due diligence. Hire private investigators to learn all about that person.
You have so many options with $175 million.
Its a little disappointing to see there were no $1,000,000. Hopefully next time around there are multiple winners made, even if the jackpot rolls over again.
Im thinking Oregon needs bring home some dough during this next go! I'll volunteer to escort it to my bank!
Good luck everyone!
Yes, Yes & Yes.
l * think we lottery players are to blame because we just not picking the right numbers for either the jackpot itself or 2 nd place loved one.On the point of Oregon winning, going off the pecking order, Weshar75 has to go first. You'll get your turn.
Make it count people, rein in this rogue jackpot.
Message to Lottery Players.
The Powerball will go up ONCE AGAIN. TO $2Billion Dollar's. This Year 2016 The Winner will Win $1,200,000,000 Billion dollars. The winner will be from New York city
Thank You
Let's hope it climbs that high once in our lifetimes.
So I assume you plan on moving to NYC and not purchase a Powerball ticket until the jackpot reaches $2 billion? and at that point elect to purchase one ticket (self pick of course)and be the sole winner taking the $1.2 billion cash option.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I like your prediction.
From your lips to God's ears
I am new at posting to this forum, yet I have followed it for years.
Good luck to everyone!
Man plans, God laughs.
Welcome VIP3772
I Call it Prophecy. I BELIEVE
Maybe I Already Live in New York City(HA) I Plan to Purchase ONE Ticket (YES) own Number's (Yes) Be the Sole Winner The Jackpot, Your Correct
It be Interesting (Believe, Dream, Think, Visualize, With the POWER OF MY MIND. What ever the MIND can Dream IT Shall Achieve.
Thank You
I was debating on choosing my own numbers for the next drawing and came across weird trend. In the last 5 PB draws, there has only been one number that has repeated itself (35). I think I will choose numbers that haven't been drawn as that eliminates 24 WB and 5 PB.
I am curious to see if this trend continues.
Of Course. Always Choose your Own Number's. Make the Numbers Special. Because the POWERBALL IS Special
I Believe i will be the Only Winner. In New York City. So Good Luck to You
The Younger person TO Win the New York City Jackpot Worth $1.2 Billion dollar's. That is Me Trust Me
Thank You
newbies should be seen and ignored
Newbies #'s and $'s are just as good as the next player.
Jackpot Winner is Me $1.2 Billion dollar's.... Winner winner Winner Winner Winner Winner Winner Winner Winner Winner Winner Winner Winner
Good luck to everybody, whether they are in a can't lose-state or not.
Thank you.
Joshua1991,
We may see another $1B pr $1B+ jackpot but it will probably not be a solo winner that takes it.
A 540 Million Mega Millions jackpot just got awarded to 1 player. It is certainly quite possible for it to go to only one winner if it's not a very common bunch of numbers that people pick.
lol
$422M? And this sweet crib in GA just sold for only $649K, 5bd, 5bth, 5,831 sq feet in a gated subdivision with tennis courts and community swimming pool. Okay, I got my tickets!!!
Nice, but the devil went down to Georgia..
Well anything is POSSIBLE. When it comes to the MIND.
I Will be The Only Winner of the Powerball Winner of $1.2 Billion dollars
THANK HYOU
Custer said something like that at the Little Big Horn!
PS
You just jinxed yourself.
Kingofearth
$540M is only .54 of the way to $1B.
Don't you think the increase in the jackpot, should it roll that high, would bring in a lot more ticket sales?
The largest MM jackpot ever, 3-30-2012 was split three ways, from the OP of this thread;
Mega Millions: $656 million, Mar. 30, 2012 - Illinois, Kansas, Maryland
The chances of a single winner for a $1 billion jackpot will go up each time the jackpot gets to that level, because the number of tickets people buy will go down. When MM was advertised at $415 million for 7/1/16 about 86 million tickets were sold. In March 2014 a $400 million MM jackpot resulted in sales of 113 million tickets, and only 3 months before that $400 million was enough to get players to buy 168 million tickets. The drawing before the record MM jackpot of March 2012 produced sales of 191 million for a jackpot of "only" $363 million.
If we actually see a jackpot reach $2 billion the first $1 billion jackpot after that will probably have sales low enough that a rollover is the most likely result.
Thank you.
Nice house.
I'd move to a no income tax state but to each his/her own.
Like i said. I Am Going to Win the Jackpot. I'm Goin to be a Billionaire Real Soon........Riches hahahahahahha

Message Power ball Players.
I WILL win the Power ball. First Billionaire From NYC. Worth $1.2Billion -$1.4Billion dollar's...... It will go UP $2.5 Billion dollar's. %75 Percent
I BELIEVE , I BELIEVE I BELIEVE, I Dream, Think, The Lottery
Thank You
I passed high school math. Times have changed quite a lot in lottery terms between 2012 and today. There would be a big increase in sales once it crosses into a billion, but no where near what it was in 2012 or in the big one from January. The goal post for a large jackpot has changed. A billion dollar jackpot today would get 1-2 winners with a slight chance of it rolling or 3+ winners.
If the Jackpot reaches 1 billion, it is no way there will be a single winner. Lottery officials will NOT allow
one person to be that rich instantly. Also, the chances of certain demographics that are not favorable winning would drive lottery officials crazy.
Yo, Golfer1960
My current house is too big, that's almost twice the size.
But getting out of Jersey would be nice even for a smaller house...with more land.
Yes Sir brother Haymaker!! Getting out of NJ would be nice (and cheaper).
Yes this house is humongous but I'd try to fill it with family, friends and lots of love!!
Here's the house from the outside:
The basement game room:
I'm going out on a limb here...not to far though.
The R/E taxes are probably less then here.
I like the porch/deck, very relaxing !
Hey golfer1960- seems like a very nice house for the money! You need to move to Georgia soon as the cost of living is so much less than Jersey. You can always upgrade later in the event of a nice windfall but at least you could start enjoying your surroundings.
Yeah Haymaker, the real estate taxes are around $6,600 per year. There's an HOA fee on top of that too of $975/year.
Sounds good D! I hope to do it soon!
MY Prophecy is $1.2Billion - $1.4 Billion dollars from MYSELF.
You might rethink your prophecy, Joshua. "...from MYSELF" would indicate you are the starting point, thus the money will be coming from you, not to you. A slight difference in the final outcome.
True, but Johnny kicked the Devils' arse!
Your delusions about the simple randomness of the lottery aside, you're demonstrating some really stupid thinking about what the lottery would want or allow if they had control of the outcome. People play the lottery in hopes of winning money and lottery marketing is all about how big a prize you could win just be being in the game. Three people netting $200 million back in January was good for marketing, but a single winner netting $600 million would have been even better.
The people who spend hundreds of dollars on tickets when the jackpot nears record levels are doing it because of the fantasy of winning the amount that's advertised. If players figured out that an advertised jackpot of $1.6 billion probably means winners getting a prize of $533 million tickets sales would be about what they are when the jackpot is advertised as $533 million. In the case of the PB record that would have meant sales of only 30% of what players spent chasing the non-existent jackpot of $1.6 billion. Lottery officials would love to see a single winner to fuel those fantasies.
I would just like to see a few winners more often. It is still a lot of money to win.
I Meant for MySelf. MY Prophecy is $1.2Billion-$1.4 Billion dollars for my Self...I Will WIn all the Money
I bought powerplay on my ticket on sunday afternoon so I would settle for a $2 million dollar win myself and not complain at all.-weshar75
