RALEIGH, N.C. — An Asheville area woman hit it big, and you might say she got "schooled" by the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Glenda Blackwell, of Leicester, North Carolina, claimed her $1 million prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Blackwell said she wanted to teach her husband a lesson about buying too many lottery tickets.

Blackwell said she was irritated by her husband's request to buy some Powerball tickets, so she decided to get a Carolina Millions scratch-off ticket for herself.

"I wanted to show him that luck doesn't always hit," Blackwell said.

When she scratched her ticket, she knew she wasn't going to be able to prove her point.

"I had to eat my words," Blackwell said. "But those are pretty good words to eat."

Blackwell had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year, or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum and, after federal and state tax withholdings, received $415,503. She said she plans to use the money to get a new home.

Blackwell bought the $10 ticket at the Suttles Quik Mart on New Found Road in Asheville.

Carolina Millions launched earlier this month with eight top prizes of $1 million, lottery officials said. Seven top prizes remain.

Ticket sales from games like Carolina Millions made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million dollars for the state last year, officials said.

Smart move on her part.   That design looks like the carolina panthers design.  Interesting marketing.

I just watched this story on Fox this morning. The woman hid her head from the camera but was quite upbeat and happy about the whole thing. She was quite willing to eat her words.
