GOP bill would keep Wisconsin lottery winners secret

MADISON, Wis. — Two Republican lawmakers are introducing a bill that would allow lottery winners in Wisconsin to remain anonymous.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Rep. Gary Tauchen announced the bill Tuesday, about 40 minutes after Manuel Franco of West Allis appeared a Madison news conference to reveal he had won a $768 million Powerball jackpot, the third largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

Current state law doesn't allow lottery winners to remain anonymous. Tauchen said in a news release announcing the bill that lottery winners often become targets of fraud, abuse and harassment.

Several states are exploring various levels of anonymity for lottery winners. (See Growing number of states move to shield lottery winners, Lottery Post, Apr. 14, 2019.)

Franco said at his news conference that he felt a sense of paranoia after he realized he won. He says he thought somebody was behind him every day and he kept the winning ticket in a safe.

Separately, another area of Wisconsin lottery law that apparently needs to be addressed by lawmakers is payouts to more than one player. Currently, the state requires the Wisconsin Lottery to issue a prize to only one player. If multiple people have pooled their money to purchase tickets, they need to get a court order to tell the lottery how to divide the winnings.

So it took a major powerball winner in Wisconsin for them to see the light.  This guy said he was worried about people coming up behind him.  Every <snip> criminal now knows this guys name and address.  About time for Wisconsin to do the right thing.

Manuel Franco's win got everybodies' attention. Now the lawmakers can improve Wisconsin.

Manuel now has enough money to protect himself and anybody else he wants too.  I hope he learns from the mistakes of past winners. He ought to hire wise counsel who know these things.

Winning the lottery is not a personal achievement. You would be the type of winner for which most of us would worry .

Just saw where Wisconsin had 7 Power Ball winners but never had a Mega Millions jackpot winner. If this bill is limited to just jackpot winners, it won't effect many Wisconsinites.

Lots of players want their 15 minutes of fame and considering you only invested $2 and it's your money, spend it any way you want. But lots of other people will criticize what you do.

Oh and if beating odds of over 292 million to 1 is not a personal achievement, what is?

I guess most of us understand winning a lottery is pure luck and random. No one views it as being achieved through hard work.

LOL

Pure luck. Hate to burst your sugar coated bubble.  All players are equally deserving and time playing has nothing to do with it and you conceded this fact.  First timers win as well. Now if you crack the code, let us know.

With your comments, you certainly would be "famous" for all the wrong reasons.  I hope you have more going on in your life vs hoping to win a lottery just so people will acknowledge you as important.

JBL- Want a “ Beautiful  Famous Grave” one you can see from space? Buy some land out in Big Sky country, or Texas where land goes for a song. Get the exact measurements on the Pyramid on the Giza plateau, and build that thing. When you buy the farm, have yourself embalmed, wrapped up in cotton strips, hey you can afford it. Just remember, the Egyptian Pharoahs believed in the afterlife- so you can’t take it with you. Just one thing though;it’s a sad existence, being a millionaire and checking in weekly on the progress of your tomb being built, but to each he’s own.😏
