Mega Millions

Updated annuity and cash jackpot final tallies

By Todd Northrop

After a record run of 36 drawings without a jackpot winner, the 37th drawing of the multi-state Mega Millions game produced a single $1.05 billion winner last night when one lottery ticket sold in Michigan matched all five numbers plus the Mega Ball.

It was the third time a lottery jackpot had grown to more than $1 billion, and the second time a single ticket won $1 billion or more.

The public has been electrified the couple of weeks by the meteoric rise of the Mega Millions and Powerball lottery jackpots, which both simultaneously set records for the longest unbroken streaks. At the finish line, Mega Millions went for one extra drawing and finished by creating a lottery billionaire.

The winner of the unimaginable haul will choose between being paid $1.05 billion in 30 annually-increasing payments over 29 years or the lump-sum cash value of $776.6 million.

According to USA Mega's Mega Millions Jackpot Analysis, after all taxes are paid, the winner either will receive $617.9 million by the end of 29 years, or $450.5 million in cash all at once. (We know which option we'd take!)

The winning ticket was sold at Kroger #632 at 47650 Grand River Ave in Novi, Michigan. It is the 18th Mega Millions jackpot won in Michigan over the years; the last one was a prize shared with Rhode Island on October 13, 2017.

Michigan was one of the original founding members of Mega Millions, which was called The Big Game at the time.

The Mega Millions winning numbers for Friday, January 22, 2021, were: 4, 26, 42, 50, and 60, with Mega Ball number 24. The Megaplier was 2.

It's hard to imagine the winner getting much sleep Friday night, as they try to process winning such an unimaginably huge lottery jackpot awarded to a single ticket — the one they're holding in their hand.

Millions of lottery players in the USA and around the world are wondering what they are planning to do with all that loot.

What is the first thing you would do?

(Here's what we would do.)

Unlike the South Carolina winner of a $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot in 2018 who could remain anonymous, Michigan law only allows winners of in-state games to keep their name from the public. We'll have to keep an eye on what happens there, as past court battles over anonymity did not always turn out the way the law was written.

Fortunately, even if you didn't win the jackpot, the Mega Millions game still offers another 8 ways to win lower-tier prizes.

In addition to the jackpot winner, 10 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 2 from Florida, 1 from Maryland, 1 from Missouri, 1 from North Carolina, 1 from New Jersey, 2 from New York, 1 from Pennsylvania, and 1 from Virginia.

Two of the second-prize winners — the tickets sold in North Carolina and Virginia — were purchased with the Megaplier option for an extra $1. Because they purchased the Megaplier, those tickets are now worth $2 million after being multiplied by the Megaplier number of 2.

187 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Of those tickets, 31 were purchased with the Megaplier option, increasing the prize to $20,000, and 26 were sold in California, where the prize was $11,036 this drawing.

Unlike all the other Mega Millions states, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.

In total, nearly 7.4 million tickets won prizes across the game's nine prize tiers in Friday's drawing. Apart from the jackpot, there were more than $46.2 million in prizes awarded last night.

A complete list of payouts for all prizes and the official drawing video can be found at USA Mega's Mega Millions Drawing Information page, as well as at Lottery Post's Mega Millions Prize Payouts page.

The still record-holder for the world's largest lottery jackpot was a $1.5864 billion Powerball jackpot in Jan. 2016, split three-ways by ticket-holders in California, Florida, and Tennessee.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million.

Had no one matched all of the numbers drawn lottery officials said the next jackpot would have reached $1.1 billion.

With the jackpot being won Friday, the next Mega Millions annuity jackpot estimate is reset to its starting point of $20 million.

Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.

The Mega Millions winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing takes place.

What a great win. Perfect way to start off the new year ! Congrats lucky player(s). Enjoy your newly acquired wealth. Thumbs Up

How do you find out if the numbers that we drawn were EASY PICKS

or the persons own number??? does anyone know how to

get the answers for winning numbers that are EASY PICK??

Thanks

Think's avatarThink

Too few second prize winners on a record jackpot.  Why not just set the games back to 8 years ago matrixes and hold big multistate raffles once a year or every other year to get the billion dollar jackpots.

For how many tickets that must have been sold here there were NO second prizes in Michigan and it has taken 4 years to get a jackpot!
That is the definition of a terrible game!  The MM and PB used to be much much better games.

On the old matrixes there were more winners and the JPs got to $400-$500 Million.  Put the games back to what they were and have Billion dollar raffles instead!

Any way congratulations to the winner(s) and don't spend it all on booze and hookers!

Usually won't know until the ticket is cashed.  I have never seen Michigan publish that info until the ticket has been cashed.

Michigan State Lottery rules allow winners to remain anonymous, I hope the winner chooses to remain private. If he/she goes public, his/her dream will become a nightmare.

Wrong!!!

In Michigan the winners of the Multi-state games can not remain anonymous.

Only Michigan games over $10,000 wins can opt out.  Does NOT apply to the multistate games.

More players would probably mean more second prize winners.

If they had kept it at $40mul to start, this would've happened in weeks ago

Toronto

They need to combine both games and go 3 drawings a week

Just curious?... Where did you get that erroneous info from..?  While it's true that MM originally started as " The Big Game".. it was started in Atlanta,Georgia..!!  and I don't remember the cause having involved ANY Northern States, for the reason explained was that Southern States and players were feed up with always resulting in the Powerball jackpots being won in Northern States... so how could Michigan or any other Northern State be one of the "Founding"  States ?...Shocked so expound please..!!

l believe millions of players are thinking the same thing, BUT we know or should have known that the odds were never in our favor. Personally, I * think, if a jackpot rises over $500 mil, there should be at least 2-3 winners. Gonna guess the winner is retired and wouldn't it be ironic if the winner was flush with money prior to this win?  Cool

It's in the first paragraph of the Mega Millions website 'About Us'.

The winner may well be retired, but I would bet he/she doesn't have 400 some million dollars before the win. I may be wrong, but I really doubt someone that is rich isn't gonna play MM or PB or any lottery.

I have a suggestion for megamillions if they ever decide to enhance their game. One is when the jackpot reaches 1 billion dollars all non-jackpot prizes are doubled. For example a 5+0 match (without megaplier) would pay 2M instead of one million. Add Megaplier up to 10M. The lowest prize you could win is $4. This hike in prizes only happens when the jackpot reaches 1 billion dollars.

What a great win. Perfect way to start off the new year ! Congrats lucky player(s). Enjoy your newly acquired wealth. Thumbs Up

Great blessings at first of the year, for sure, mid-year to end of year, i am VERY happy for mid-western, praying he donate or she, i am just that way in life.

Dad was saying each time this happen to me, "CASSIE, so many strugglin' and i am glad i am not a PB or MM player, i m rememberin dad was 100%right, play games with a better odds, in california to here down south."

Daddy used to always say to me, throughout last year, how it's not a "fun game anymore, so he stopped playing after buying tickets for almost 35 years.

Dad goes: CASSIE, don't buy it, no need. a big ole 'waste of hard earned cash, the odds are not in our favor, that, it's a set up,racket, when 1 person only win, when it should be, (i agree) 10 to 100 per state= a piece of the good ole' AMERICAN APPLESmiley pie sliced 8 to dozen ways, for all to enjoy...

I.E.,

4 out of five numbers= quarter of a million each or whatever, to winning for dozens of(per state) MORE winner's when it hit OVER 100 MILLION, i 100 % agree,

let there befoer more winner's who won 4  lucky numbers(w/mega or wit' the power ball) or even dozens, per state $50,000 each for 100+ people,

Cheers and or fifty PER STATE "dozens" that would be more fair, to those spending lots of cash,or even a buck or two or five bucks etc.al.,

You're playing so much and 1 singular BLESSED person win ALL and how it should not be this way over 100 million.

I was literally standing' in life, other night, while in line i ripped up ticket, and said, nvm(never mind) give me 1 or 2 quick pick, Yes Nodtook a chance,

when i am not into it, win more on pick 4 regularly,so i will keep hopefully winning multiple pick 4 tickets! per year. LOLLOLLOL I shall stick with "better odds."

CONGRATULATIONS. i hope he or she invest $$$ and donate. Hurray!

I sure would, help so many in mid-west to east coast strugglin, to west. A beautiful win, god bless the winner." Bye 4 now."

The winner may well be retired, but I would bet he/she doesn't have 400 some million dollars before the win. I may be wrong, but I really doubt someone that is rich isn't gonna play MM or PB or any lottery.

I have a relative that used to be a "meter man" for an electric utility company.  His job was to ride around in a company pick up truck reading electric meters attached to peoples houses.

His route was a highly affluent/upscale or as some people say "toney" community. (A big bunch of multi-millionaires lived in the town where he read electric meters.)

My meter man relative liked to stop for lunch in a local deli and became a frequent customer there.  That deli was also a lottery retailer.

One day while having lunch at the deli, my relative noticed many signs taped to the wall that said "We had a winner!" written on them.  Many of those signs were announcing big wins of $2,000 or more. So my relative asked the guy who owned the deli why they had so many big winners as it seemed to him that there were many more signs than he'd ever seen before in other lotto joints that he'd been in.

"It's all those rich SOB's that live around here!" was the deli owners response.  "They send their hired help in here to buy hundreds of dollars of tickets at a time."  You should never think wealthy people don't play the lottery.  And they have one helluva lot more "pocket money" to play with than The Average Joe does. That's why they do it.  Dropping 500 or a thousand bucks on Lotto or scratch-offs is no problem for them whatsoever.  G5

Im starting to think that the lottery is rigged. How in the hell that only one ticket win one billion  dollar when you have millions of people especially  in New York  city  playing  more than  any others  state. TELL ME IF IM the only  one thinking  like that.  There  should  atleast be 3 or 4 winners  or 2 winners of the jackpot.  But only 1 jackpot  winner  make no sense  to me. I wonder why bother  play

RIgged? Nah. Consider the thing called "Odds."

The odds of a person being struck or killed in a lightning strike are said to be 1- 500,000. When was the last time you heard of anyone or knew someone killed that way?

On the other hand- The odds of winning the Mega Million jackpot is 1-302,575,350

The Powerball odds are not much better: 1- 292,201,338

Once you have those numbers by comparison rolling around in your head, you come to realize it's not that easy hitting the jackpot after all.

Agree 100%, and important to point out, rich people take more risks than the average joe, which is how most of them got rich in the first place....

A few years ago I had a wealthy business partner who carried around $1500 in cash, out in public and on a daily basis (for "emergencies"). He didn't even blink while peeling off a Benjamin or two to pay for our dinner. I have to admit, that carefree attitude motivated me to get a good job and save money.

It doesn't bother me at all to drop $20-40 on a game once or twice a year. So it wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't sting for someone wealthier to spend many times that much.

It shouldn't be a surprise there was only one winner, as someone pointed out, the odds are so astronomical now. That's literally the only reason a jackpot can even get this high. In fact, for this drawing there was a 55% chance there would be NO winner.

If they had kept it at $40mul to start, this would've happened in weeks ago

tend to disagree.

Unless the lottery is willing to subsidize prizes, they just haven't been making the sales..

heck..

the growth from last draw ($865m jackpot to $1.05 b is only $185m.. for cash of maybe $136.9m increase.. that's only about 201m tickets sold.

Someone else has said only 55% of the number combinations were covered..

The 1.6b draw had something like 85% of the numbers covered. (IIRC it climbed something like $500-$600m from the previous draw...)

It was noticeable here in NZ that there was nothing on the news about the draws (PowerBall or Mega Millions) and nothing about them being won either...

Usually we hear about them when they start getting over half a billion.. and people wanting to buy tickets start lining up.. (nothing on the news here about people lining up to buy tickets.. no lottery mania...)

Were people in USA lining up to buy tickets? (Curious to know).. remember, the previous jackpot was $865m.. so there should have been an expectation of the next one being over a billion...

And where does the money to pay this come from?

They are already running a risk (Except for California) with fixed value prizes... Heck, look at the recent Powerball.. winner got $23 million, and "43 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize:"

43 x 2nd division winners... over $43m paid out ($51m I think)... 7 of them in California, where the value of the 2nd division pool was only $236,789 (each getting only $33,827 instead of a million.... )

In the Megamillions $1b draw.. all other prizes came to only ~$46.3m  (California had a 2nd division pool worth over $2m.. when the jackpot was nearly 50x the size of the recent powerball...

Kao1632,

It'll be interesting to see if each of those states pay the fixed amounts for 5+0. I am curious if they can pull from the prior record selling jackpot. Because when the jackpot reaches 1 billion every Tom, Rick, and Harry gets a ticket or two.

BTW are there any rumblings on any changes to the MM or PB Matrices?

Keep in mind Louis6 that the odds to win MM are 302,000,000 to 1.

That is probably more than the number of people old enough to buy lottery tickets in the entire U.S.

So, if for every drawing everyone in the U.S. who was old enough to buy a ticket did in fact buy one then not all the combinations would be covered!

According to this the number of people over 18 in the U.S. is 209,000,000

https://www.infoplease.com/us/census/demographic-statistics

but in some states you have to be 19 or 21 to buy tickets so figure closer to 200,000,000 people can even buy tickets!

The retailer that sold the winning PB ticket in Maryland got $100k perhaps it's different for MM?

EnReval

the lines were mainly in the grocery stores in TX.

Also, I noticed 43 tickets won 2nd price for the drawing after the big win. Curious if these were regular played or multi-draw and these numbers were in for the big draw

we may never know

if that number had come out on Wednesday, they probably could have won millions

waiting on the next one, for at least 100mil

thanks

I don't know which state pays which for 'selling the winning ticket', it does vary state by state and could be wrong but believe some pay NOTHING!

I don't think they'll be changing MM/PB matrices anytime soon. However, I have heard that the latter is considering increasing the frequency of drawings. The pandemic made it harder to forecast sales over longer periods, so decreasing the time between draws would make it easier to set jackpots. Just a rumor of course, but apparently some lotteries are making subtle changes to their rules to accommodate such a change.

I forgot about that!  I believe they crapified the retailer compensation when they crapified the starting Jackpots.  It hasn't come up until now.
