$1.9 BILLION POWERBALL JACKPOT SETS WORLD RECORD OF UNIMAGINABLE WEALTH

Powerball

Jaw-dropping prize money on the line for Monday drawing

Cash option nearly $1 billion

By Todd Northrop

Last night Powerball didn't just set a new lottery jackpot record, it crushed the old record, putting the concept of a $2 billion lottery jackpot within reach.

When the 40th drawing of the current Powerball jackpot run was conducted last night, it produced a combination of numbers that most lottery players typically wouldn't choose on their own: All the numbers except one were greater than the "birthday number" range (31), and the Powerball was a lower number than all of the first five.

It was the kind of numbers that USA Mega owner Todd Northrop recommended to Newsweek Friday.

And true to form, nobody had selected those numbers — not even a lottery terminal's quick picks generated those numbers among the hundreds of millions of tickets printed.

In the early morning hours Sunday, the lotteries finally determined that nobody has matched all the numbers drawn, and that a new world record would be established.

The new annuity jackpot record of $1.9 billion is accompanied by a cash value of $929.1 million — nearly a billion dollars in cash! That's enough to make it the second-highest cash value in history.

To get to this size, the jackpot has been growing since it started on Aug. 6 as a $20 million prize — now 40 consecutive drawings without a winner.

Lottery players dreaming what all the cash will look like in their bank account after federal and state taxes are taken out can see an after-tax analysis of the current Powerball jackpot by visiting USA Mega's Powerball Jackpot Analysis page. Rather than simply showing the initial withholdings a lottery winner would face like other "copy cat" websites, the Jackpot Analysis page also includes the additional taxes that will be due after the initial withholdings, and will even allow players to see the taxes due under different filing statuses.

The rush of ticket sales over the next few days may propel the jackpot to an even higher amount before the drawing takes place Monday. Lottery Post and USA Mega will update the jackpot tallies displayed if such an increase occurs.

The quickest way to find the winning numbers after the drawing Monday will be by visiting USA Mega (www.usamega.com) at 10:59 pm Eastern Time (7:59 pm Pacific), when the winning numbers will be published live as they are drawn.

Players looking for the nearest official lottery retailer — or maybe just a different store without such a long line — are urged to use the free Lottery Places app available for iOS, Android, and Windows. The app can find lottery stores in every Powerball state and can search across state lines — something even official state lotteries can't do.

Some states offer direct online sales, allowing players to bypass the store and purchase tickets from home. States that offer this ability include Colorado (Mega Millions and Powerball), Michigan (Mega Millions and Powerball), Minnesota (Mega Millions and Powerball), Oregon (Mega Millions and Powerball), Texas (Mega Millions and Powerball), and Virginia (Mega Millions and Powerball). Note that some of these links will only work properly for residents of the states mentioned.

Players outside the USA can use a reputable butler service, which provides scanned copies of the purchased lottery tickets securely held on behalf of the customer. In the past, the lottery ticket service was used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida.

In Saturday night's Powerball drawing, there was no jackpot winner, but 17 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 3 from California, 2 from Colorado, 1 from Florida, 1 from Georgia, 2 from Kentucky, 1 from Massachusetts, 1 from Michigan, 1 from Missouri, 1 from New Jersey, 1 from New York, 2 from Pennsylvania, and 1 from South Dakota.

The California second-prize winners will be awarded $1,120,390 each instead of the fixed $1 million prize awarded in the other states. By law, California awards all lottery prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold within California and the number of tickets that won at each prize level in the state.

Out of all the second-prize tickets, only the one sold in Kentucky was purchased with the Power Play option, doubling their prize to $2 million.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts and the Powerball Double Play Prize Payouts pages at Lottery Post.

The Power Play option is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered with the Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts.

Also, a total of 270 tickets matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball to win a $50,000 prize. Of those tickets, 51 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 43 were sold in California, where the prize awarded this drawing is $20,010.

The Powerball winning numbers for Saturday, November 5, 2022, were 28, 45, 53, 56, and 69, with Powerball number 20. The Power Play number was 3.

The Saturday Double Play drawing results were 4, 23, 27, 31, and 56, with Powerball number 15. Double Play is a game option currently available in 14 states that lets you play your numbers in a second drawing for an extra $1 per play, with a chance to win up to $10 million in cash. See How to Play Powerball at USA Mega for more information about Double Play.

Following the Saturday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $243.2 million from its previous amount of $1.6568 billion. The cash value was raised by $146.7 million from its previous amount of $782.4 million.

Powerball is currently offered for sale in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.

Why with All the people that come out of the woodwork to play this powerball does it only jump up 200 million for the next  drawing?

That sounds extremely low!!!

Powerball777

They raised it $243M, but grossly underestimated the Jackpot.  They will rectify that tomorrow when it's set @ $2.0B or $2.1B. This is uncharted territory for the lottery folks!

Unlikely.

That would need to be few more draws at least. And people will run out of money by that time to keep playing at that pace.

It will be won on Monday. Most likely with splits.

Oh I'm sure they raised a bit more than that!  With the amount of people playing it should be at 2.2 already!

Since we are on the subject of Lottery...... why haven't the powers that be bring back the 40 million at the start of the game?  People obviously have showed an interest in the games?

"Currently it's just #2 on the cash value rankings . "

If you take $10 bucks from this weeks paycheck you can also earn more interest but I doubt anybody's dumb enough to think that means they got a raise. As of now the official forecast for MM is that when the drawing rolls around on Monday night they'll have sold just under 95% as many tickets as they did for the record jackpot in January 2016, coming up shy of an actual record. Maybe they could offer the cash in Pesos and claim it's 19 times higher than the record.

"do you call your job n say u quit or show up as a courtesy? "

If you're smart you stick around for at least a month, unless you bought  the winning ticket far away from both home and work.

"people will run out of money by that time to keep playing at that pace.  "

I've always figured that at some point sales will start to drop from the peak, but I don't know when that would be. As the jackpot gets bigger people who rarely play will start, but few of the people who are spending $50 for one drawing are going to keep doing that. Not that many are likely to realize, but at some point you're probably playing for 1/2 or 1/3 of the actual jackpot because multiple winners becomes the most likely outcome, but so far that's only happened a few times.

"It will be won on Monday. Most likely with splits. "

The most likely outcome for Monday will be a single winner, with perhaps a 40 to 45% chance of a rollover depending on how  much higher than the forecast actual sales are.

Bleudog101

Did you mean PB instead of MM in your first paragraph?

Just because someone has a ton of money doesn't mean they can do what they want and treat others however they want without consequences.

I agree 110%. You do not have to disclose you won the lottery either but could say you are moving to take care of a sick family member, etc.

I remember posting one time that it would probably take me a month or two to do this properly and have my matters reassigned and handle things ethically.  One lp member told me I should forget about my license requirements, etc and so what if I was censured or disbarred.  Obviously someone who had never accomplished anything in life.

perhaps, then the algo for generating the quick-pick numbers has been manipulated to prevent certain number(s) paired with some numbers. so it means some blocks of the number combinations wouldn't be purchased, and the drawn numbers fall into one of the blocks.

I assume you are talking "cash value" rather than the jackpot (That got the advantage of higher interest rates increasing the annuity value)

You only have Sunday and Monday for sales... whereas Saturday's draw had three days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.. any increase over 67% of Saturday's increase is "good".

Having Sunday as a sales day may further impact sales (not sure which way :))

A New York resident won the Mega Millions jackpot of Sept. 21, 2021, worth $432M. At least there is a list of the top 25 New York lottery jackpot winners. There are states who have never won a lottery jackpot. So New York is not as rare as you believe

Stack47

If the amount of sales I read is correct, 279,269,971 tickets were sold for 11/05 drawing and with a 95% chance, someone should have won. I believe the record ticket sales was set on Jan 13, 2016 when 635,103,137 tickets were sold and three divided the $1.58 billion advertised jackpot. Based on that statistic, it looks like sales were over twice as much six years ago with almost an equal size jackpot.

Read where lots of players say they would be ecstatic winning the second $1 million prize and who wouldn't be but doing the math, an Ohio Classic Lotto player beat odds of 14 million to 1 and won $38 million on a $1 wager.  Not all states have that choice so in those states PP is still a better option to win $1 million.

A jackpot with almost the same payoff sold 2.27 times more tickets in 2016 then in 2022 and had over twice as many rollovers. Wondering why sales are lower now and rollovers are twice as many. Did players finally figure out they can't collect the advertise jackpot and less than a third of it by taking the cash?

Petrust99

Right,

Powerball is such a coward...with the power play you only win 2m compare to mega you could win up to 5m. X10 option will stop if the Jackpot is over 100m.3 draws a week not a good idea,it doesn't grow faster  like they said, mega does better, any more ???

Powerball777

Seems to me a lot of whining going on here @ LP.  If by some super miracle of a chance you beat the 1:292M odds and won the Jackpot, would you really care about the cash option & tax deductions and refuse the $700M?

I THINK NOT!

It usually takes generations to create this kind of wealth. And look here, you can merely win it with two dollars. Anybody can be a billionaire instantly! So why isn't anyone yet? It's too much money. The news is talking about the disappearance of the middle class in America, and the lotto is talking a billion dollars to anyone. I don't get it. But if I win, I guess I will.

TwoMillion

though there were ~13 million combinations or 4.4% of all the possible combinations un-purchased in the Saturday draw, which were a lot in comparison to taking only one combination to win.

perhaps, the QP algo might have generated a lot of duplicate combinations even $558 Millions was spent. it doesn't mean the algo would generate 279 million distinct combinations.

Just how much is one billion dollars?

How big is a billion dollars in $1 bills?
One billion $1 bills would cover a four-square mile area, or the equivalent of 2,555 acres. If you laid the $1 bills end to end, the trail would measure 96,900 miles. One billion $1 bills would weigh around 10 tons. If you want your winnings in quarters, it will weigh 22,680 tons.

Thank you Kentucky lottery.   Sitting here watching Good Morning America and replayed my last Powerball ticket on-line!

I'm in Illinois (actually 20 minutes from the 1.3 bil winner from July) so I can't imagine anyone in Il wins this. It'll likely be split 3 or 4 ways.

Hope you're wrong! I live just over the state line and happily bought my two picks for tonight in Illinois for anonymity.

Dude, you may be playing all the numbers on the lottery play slip but you are not playing all the lottery combinations. There are 292.2 million lottery combinations. In order to play all those combinations, you would need to spend 584.4 million dollars

Oh cool. 584.4 mil to win two billion, I'm going to the bank right now!

Tony Numbers's avatarTony Numbers

Well I guess the only thing we have control of is the place we play our quick picks. We need one of those " Lucky stores" where  previous winning tickets were sold. And you still have to be the lucky one of the visitors of that store!

Does anyone know if Todd can tell how close any of the numbers generated by the lp number generator were to the winning numbers?

I played 6 LP quick picks on Powerball over the weekend and 1 matched the Powerball, 1 matched 2 numbers, and another matched 1.

I'm doing a little study on LP vs Terminal quick picks for Powerball and hope to have the results soon.

2555 acres of land seems to be about the right size piece of property to purchase after tonights win...... However, the 22K + tons in quarter weight won't be on list of options, for this participant, unless the quarters were all pre 1965.

Best of luck to each and every LP member.

The Texas Lottery Projected Jackpot info just came out.....

Today's Jackpot currently is at $1.977B.  54.5% of all combinations are covered at that amount.  If it rolls to Wed, 11/9, the new Jackpot will be $2.3B.

I think it definitely goes to $2B or a little higher today. Need it to be $2.05B for a $1B cash option.

This is the 41st drawing since 8/6/22.

Good luck! ❣

Of course, I'd even donate a large sum to the website

Not sure abt playing online bcuz somebody got your bank info and name

EnReval

Are u sure 54% only?

Powerball777

Yes- 54% coverage of combinations on sales of $321M.  Sales for Saturday's draw was 61%.

Like someone said, with 3 draws a week and a crappy economy, it's the PERFECT STORM for record Jackpots!

Vote for SANITY tomorrow please!

So we may not get a winner tonight

There will be one winner tonight and I will not forget about anyone in this thread. You will all get cash and gold from me.

"Did you mean PB instead of MM in your first paragraph? "

That or I had a stroke instead of a minor brain cramp.

"Why THRIFTY why?? "

If it gets hit and I'm not the winner  I'd at least enjoy seeing the pandemonium, and finding out how many people actually play 1,2,3,4,5,+6.

"279,269,971 tickets were sold for 11/05 drawing and with a 95% chance, someone should have won. "

Did you forget about duplicates? Sales were actually about 269 million tickets. That uses 60.17% of the combinations, and 23.5% were played multiple times. For the current record set in 2016 the 635 million tickets sold used 88.62% of the combinations. 24.73% were sold once, 26.88% were sold twice, and 37.01% were sold 3 or more times. As always, those numbers ignore the effect of  people playing non-random selections.

"an Ohio Classic Lotto player beat odds of 14 million to 1 and won $38 million on a $1 wager.

Even more reason why I don't understand why so many people spend $2 to play PB or MM when the jackpot is $20 to $40 million.

"so I can't imagine anyone in Il wins this."

You think the balls know where the last winner was and take that into account?

"It'll likely be split 3 or 4 ways."

Very unlikely unless there's something about the drawn combination that makes it unusually popular.

"The Texas Lottery Projected Jackpot info just came out "

And it has some good news for the people talking about a $3 billion jackpot. The previous worksheet  forecast sales of 74.8% of combinations for Wednesday (if it rolls) and now it's 60.9%. Actual sales will change, but right now the forecast gives a .545*.609 = 1 in 3 chance of rolling past Wednesday night. If that happens there's a pretty good chance of seeing that $3 billion advertisement. There's even a chance it could get big enough that some no/low tax states could make an actual billionaire out of a single winner.

Not worth the headache.

What will 1.9 billion do for you?

Say a mean tweet and melt some liberal commie snowflake, and you will be sued for your 1.9 billion dollar win.

Might as well take that two bucks and buy some soil and some seeds cause you gonna have to grow your own food during the coming economic apocalypse.

Thanks a lot Brandon...

The downfall here playing on-line (KY) is that according to an email from them they will NOT cut separate checks like they would store bought winning tickets.

Forgot about that until just now, but will cross that bridge when she comes in tonight.

It only takes 1 ticket to win.

AceKicka's avatarAceKicka

.... So far, the best "winning" combination for me was one that I played last week. One of my nephews had come up with it before he became a victim of some senseless teenage violence last summer.

Although he wasn't even old enough to legally play, he really thought that he could win. We'll see....

Here's to you, X-Man!

TwoMillion

just an observation,

someone is rich like Goldman Sach could spend $292 million to buy all the possible combinations.

let's assume Goldman Sach paid someone to create a printer that can fill in the ovals on the powerball slip.

then assume the gas station attendant(s) could process the slips at the rate of 1 / minutes, then it'd take that gas station 9 years to complete the purchase of 292,200,000 tickets

Goldman Sach could distribute the slips to 50 people, and go to 50 different gas stations to purchase the tickets, then it'd take about 2 months for these 50 gas stations to process the purchase.

for the case of 100 gas stations, it'd take a gas station a month to process the purchase.

also, there's chance that GS would have to share the jackpot with other winners; so it could be logistic nightmare, data quality problem, and physically impossible to print the tickets in time for the draw.

Powerball777

Definitely not worth the hassle and risk. But what if you covered just 25% of combinations? Decent chance you would come out ahead.

Just sayin

tvboris's avatartvboris

If you have funds to cover 25% of tickets, than it still doesn't make sense.

I'll skip the part whether can physically do it.

But the thing is, that if you have enough funds to cover 25% or even 10% , why the hell would you even play lottery. You have plenty of money to live the happiest life.

If that was on the borrowed money, well, I suggest to run away with them. Still the chance is higher not being caught.

Lottery is for the folks who actually doesn't have any money, and a chance to to simply buy a ticket and daydream till the drawing results are announced.

The lottery is not for the folks who already has plenty of monies.

There are some states that don't tax lottery winnings, but you still have to pay Uncle Sam (I.R.S.) their share.

No. It is $584 m to win $929.1 million (less federal tax) giving

$585,370,045 after fed tax (but before state tax)

Leaving you with $1,379,045 in the hand (if your state doesn't tax any of it...)

You will, of course, also be winning something like $69 m in second div (less tax) plus other prizes

So you wouldn't be completely out of pocket..

Unless there are 2 or more winning tickets.. Then you have lost big time..

Wow, who would have thought, TWO BILLION DOLLARS!!!

I just want everyone to know not to get disappointed this evening, if you watch the drawing live, or be it tomorrow when your checking online, or perhaps if your still a bit old fashion & you check your numbers in the printed newspaper. It is not going to matter to all those who purchased tickets the past few months.

The reason why, is there is going to be only 1 winner. THAT WILL BE ME!!!

Bought my ticket for 12 draws through 04 DEC 22 in Indiana.   That state still holds the record for most Powerball JACKPOT wins---all six numbers, though it's been a long dry spell for them there too.   Then to Caesars to lose money and now home!

Bought two PB tickets Online a couple minutes ago. If you read where an Online self pick in KY won, it will probably be me.
