I own a few stones that recommend using either a honing oil or water, and I always use water because once you use oil, you would need to boil the stone to get the oil off of it. Water works just fine. As far as the stone goes, it looks like a kinda cheap one, probably not a very high grit (which you would want when sharpening kitchen knives), I would suggest going on Amazon and picking up one 1''x4'' medium (600 grit) EZE-Lap diamond pocket stone and one super fine (1,200 grit) stone of the same size. Together it will run you less than $30 and will last a lifetime. I have both and they're basically all I use. I would also either buy or simply make a leather strop. I made mine out of a 16 inch length of wood with a 14 inch length of an old leather belt I had lying around. Use epoxy to adhere the leather to the wood, and finally grab some red polishing compound (look for YouTube vids on how to apply the compound and use the strop.) I found that the strop was what made the difference between really sharp and holy snip , this is literally making my arm hair just fall off sharp.

EZE-LAP 36F 1 by 4 Fine Diamond Pocket Stone with Sheath

https://www.amazon.com/EZE-LAP-36F-Diamond-Pocket-Sheath/dp/B0001WP1X8/ref=pd_sim_469_6?_encoding=UTF8 pd_rd_i=B0001WP1X8 pd_rd_r=BM9V00C0TY26AGZPZ1T2 pd_rd_w=Jz4tE pd_rd_wg=Gyizc psc=1 refRID=BM9V00C0TY26AGZPZ1T2

EZE-LAP 36SF 1 by 4 Super Fine Diamond Pocket Stone with Sheath

https://www.amazon.com/EZE-LAP-36SF-Diamond-Pocket-Sheath/dp/B000UVS61Y/ref=pd_sim_469_4?_encoding=UTF8 pd_rd_i=B000UVS61Y pd_rd_r=BM9V00C0TY26AGZPZ1T2 pd_rd_w=Jz4tE pd_rd_wg=Gyizc psc=1 refRID=BM9V00C0TY26AGZPZ1T2

Ultra Sharp Diamond Sharpening Stone Set - Fine/Extra Fine - 8 x 3

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FPSUTF2?psc=1

Trend UDWS/HP/LS Honing Compound Leather Strop

https://www.amazon.com/Trend-HP-LS-Compound-Leather/dp/B0154F7FKS/ref=pd_bxgy_469_2?_encoding=UTF8 pd_rd_i=B0154F7FKS pd_rd_r=ZRGVGK3HE780DD1B8QCQ pd_rd_w=V4wOp pd_rd_wg=YBfBC psc=1 refRID=ZRGVGK3HE780DD1B8QCQ

---------------------

Cleaning a Carborundum stone

From:

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general-archive/cleaning-carborundum-stone-89621/

ultrasonic cleaner does very well on cleaning stones, makes them look and cut like new

generic oven-cleaner in a covered container (to control evaporation) and left to sit for a few hours, then scrubbed with a nylon brush

pouring laquer thinner on the stone and on a piece of clean cardboard and stoning the cardboard surface. I then wipe off any lint and let them dry.

------------

DMT Knife Sharpening Guide

https://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/DMT-Knife-Sharpening-Guide-P11.aspx

Using the DMT Knife Guide

https://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/Using-the-DMT-Knife-Guide-W42.aspx

... [ More ]
