I think there's another virtuous side of giving that is often overlooked. Many of us often have trouble with being recipients. There's a lot to be said for the graciousness, humility, and gratitude that we must cultivate in order to receive gifts. We all have needs. Recognizing needs - our own and those of others - allows us all to give and receive as needed.

I used to think only rich people could give away a lot of things. Then I began to realize that giving doesn't necessarily have to be something material. You can give hope to someone in despair, kindness to another who is lonely and even a big smile might brighten up a day. Yesterday I was sooooo stressed because yet another tooth chipped and I thought "there is no end to this - just before the holiday weekend too." (I will be in debt after I'm dead and buried.) Anyway, while sitting in the dentist's office an elderly lady (around 90 I'm guessing) turned around and said something to me that was so very sweet. She was so lovely all dressed in lavender. Then everything seemed to be a little better. Although there was no major work done (just smoothing the rough edge) I was told by the office manager when I called that I had to pay $45 minimum just for the "time" and extra for any treatment. On the way out, the dentist looked at the office manager and gave her a signal (no charge) and said "Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukkah!" I really believe the woman in the waiting room started some kind of energy flow that passed through me. Maybe you'll think I'm crazy for writing this.... [ More ]
