I agree, but whether or not we love people, sometimes there are obligations or ties we can't break. This particular quote is different from the others you write that I believe are more appropriate, i.e., not letting others hurt you or bring you down. If a person is strong and has self-esteem and self-love, then she can't be hurt by outside influences. It would be nice to live around or with people who lift you up, but it's not always possible. Ex: I've searched for a job where others are kind and supportive, but in retrospect I feel that leaving a very abusive boss was one of the most foolish things I ever did. If I didn't let outside forces affect my state of mind or well being, then all that insanity wouldn't matter. Same with family. Even as an adult, I tried to separate myself from the weeks of depression I experience after seeing or talking to my parents or siblings. It's still a challenge. Sorry to have picked on this one entry. I know being around loving, spiritual people is a great idea. I just don't think it's realistic, although we can choose to separate ourselves from the negative by joining groups like churches, synogogues, community activities, etc., or volunteering. Taking adult courses (even just for fun) is another way.... [ More ]
