Made a discovery in the squash box Monday while I was working up the container mix in the vacant end to plant the acorn squash seed. Came across a white bean shaped thing. Picked it up and it was soft inside. I thought it was a large piece of perlite. I set it to one aide and finished doing what I was doing. This morning I went and got it to see what it was. Cut it open a wee bit with my drywall knife. Had it on a paper towel and without touching it with my bare hands I squeezed it a little bit and yellow liquid came out along with elongated dark things. Wrapped it up for disposal.

Came in and done some searching on the net with key words and finally found this with a photo of egg sacks looking like what I discovered.

Skink egg. I disturbed the life cycle of the wee little things. Will leave them be next time. I am going to feel bad all day for destroying the skink egg.

We have seen skinks in the yard from time to time.

http://www.walterreeves.com/gardening-q-and-a/lizard-eggs/

... [ More ]
