Just another day in NY St. patty's day wasn't a complete wash, had some fun with our maltese Bianca, she loves to be pulled on a sliegh ( a make shift one) the top of a rubbermaid container, we had a blast, my wife put a shamrock bandanna on her and our cat gizmo we took some pictures of them , gizmo wasn't as happy as our baby girl Bianca, I had a great day .

I lived in MA and NH for a long time. I used to also travel to VT & ME as well as Quebec to ski. I often saw articles in the news about the long-term effects using salt on the roadways had on the environment. Also, some of the formulas are obviously used to produce heat to melt the ice, so they also can hurt tiny paws. Obviously they do a better job than plain sand or cat litter, but they're to be used sparingly if necessary. Thanks for asking.

Thank you justxploring. I'll keep that in mind about the natural cat litter for the future. To use on the sidewalk. How did you learn all the information about the effects of salt on animals and the environment? regards

I've lived in FL for so long that I don't know much about current methods to prevent slipping on the ice. However, I used to carry a bag of natural kitty litter in my trunk. It's safer for the environment and not corrosive like salt. Salt is "natural" but it has many negative effects and can harm animals and the environment. People often wonder why their spring plants look a little sick, and it's often because the salt has poisoned them. Chemically treated de-icing salt products also get into the local water sources. Most de-icers are technically some form of salt. The most common & least expensive ice melter is rock salt (also called Halite.) It's also the most toxic to plants. Plus rock salt can cause burns on skin or paws, and, if swallowed, can make animals very sick. Another thing is that sand or litter won't stain your carpet should you track it into your home. <br />Also yesterday we had icy sidewalks as a result of a storm and the maintenance people didn't show up to salt the sidewalks, which were dangerous to walk on. So I got a bag of salt and threw it down on the sidewalk.

<br />Sorry you're stuck. I used to live in a singlewide mobile home in NH and a few times I had to call a neighbor so I could open my door after a blizzard. I understand the plow situation. I had a contract with someone and he'd plow my driveway after a storm, but if there was a strong wind, I'd just have to shovel it all over again. I'm not sure I'd know how to drive in the snow any more.
