He encouraged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." Indeed, in that era, those accomplishments were largely unrecognized if not intentionally neglected.

He warned that multiculturalists are very often ethnocentric separatists who see little in the Western heritage other than Western crimes.
