If you still have the receipt, most surge protectors come with a lifetime warranty for the cost of the equipment that is damaged. The majority of the time, the lightning travels through the telephone cables, which is why you're not supposed to talk on a land line during a storm. A good battery backup (uninterruptible power supply) at least 750VA will run you $100 and protect your $2000 Monitor-and-PC investment (and however much your data is worth).
