Thanks Jarasan. You're correct on both statements about those leaves. That may be why some southern specimens are allowed to branch to the ground. Then my thought would be to put them under that earth hugging skirt to hold moisture. There may be too many but that would be my strategy.

My parents home had a large one in the back in DC, magnolias are beautiful and they smell great but when they drop leaves, it’s like picking up dried pieces of stiff fuzzy leather, they are un mulchable….��

Most blossoms on this tree are out of reach but as luck would have it this one was not. Blossoms are huge and smell wonderful but one lasts only a couple of days.
