The illness is caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite that can contaminate food or water with human fecal matter. The parasite is spread when people consume food or water contaminated with human fecal matter containing cyclospora oocysts. Article seems to be behind a paywall. Between this outbreak and potential for ingesting rat lung worm parasite, it seems a good idea to take extra precautions washing produce.
