Original Blog Entry: Match the game number before you read remaining prizes

A short follow-up, because the name on the ticket is not enough.

Printed overall odds are part of the launch design. They are not recalculated every time a prize is claimed. When a state publishes remaining prizes, that table is a different question: what is still listed as unclaimed, as of the last update. I do not treat one number as a correction of the other.

Before I use a remaining-prizes page I run three checks. If any of them fails, I do not cite a prize count.

1. Game number, not just the title. States reuse similar names. The number printed on the ticket has to match the game number on the official page.

2. The as-of or last-updated mark. Remaining prizes are a snapshot. If the page does not show when it was refreshed, I treat the counts as lagged, not as the pack sitting at the counter.

3. What the table actually lists. Some states show every prize tier, original and remaining. Some only highlight the larger prizes. A note that prizes are still out is not the same as a top-prize count.

Retail stock is a separate lag. A prize can still show as unclaimed while the ticket is in a warehouse or at another store. The public table cannot tell me which pack is in front of me.

I only mention a remaining count after I have read it on that state's official page for that game number. If the page is down, or the number does not match, I leave the count out.... [ More ]
