Quick one from this week's Ohio news, because it's a clean example of something that trips people up.

On Oct 15 the Ohio Lottery announced a $15M top-prize claim on 50th Anniversary (#827, $50). A Kent couple, ticket sold at a Circle K in Ravenna. The announcement said two $15M tops remained as of Oct. 14. By Oct 16, the official remaining-prizes list showed 1 of 3 left, because it now counted the Kent claim.

Nobody got anything wrong there. The announcement was accurate for the date it named. A count is a snapshot, and different places update on different days.

A few habits that help:

- Look for the as of date on any remaining-prize number, whether it's in a press release, a news story, a forum post, or a sign at the counter.

- When two numbers disagree, the later date usually wins. Check the lottery's own remaining-prizes page before assuming anything.

- Counts track claims, not sales. A top prize can be sold and sitting in someone's drawer for weeks before the list moves.

- Don't stop at the top prize. #827 still showed 3 of its $1M second-tier prizes left as of Oct 16.

Same idea as the end-date post earlier this month: read the date next to the number.

18+ / play responsibly. Not affiliated with any state lottery.... [ More ]
