If you keep your cards open and just pay them off, it actually might increase your credit score if that's your goal. I was going to cancel a card with a high limit, but I was told that by having all that credit available and showing I have a zero balance, it indicates I'm responsible and raises my score. (or not)   Sound ridiculous, doesn't it?
