OMG, this is scary and sad. A 600 acre farm 37 miles from Denver advertized people were welcome to come and dig up the remainder of carrots, potatos and leeks after their harvest. The farm family expected maybe 5,000 over the weekend would show up. They were overwhelmed with 40,000 people!

Worse than the fact that many people would drive that far to dig up some free food is that the local fuzz ticketed cars parked on the roadside that were empty. Dah, the people got out of their cars to get the food!

When I was a wee girl my mother would make me go with her all over the countryside to pick berries, tomatoes, corn, you name it. I hated it. Except the one time I took a friend and we had a berry fight, that was fun but I digress.

I took a few days off from the news and today it seems worse than ever. My parents lived through the depression and for the rest of their lives they were frugal. They didn't toss things out that maybe they would have a use for later. They didn't waste food or toss out leftovers, that was like a sin since other people were starving somewhere. They had the right tool for everything and they knew how to fix everything themselves.

I think if my parents were here they'd tell me to watch it.

Here's the Denver Post story:

http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_11052263

... [ More ]
