FBI: Bank Robbery Spree Ends in Capture

Chad Schaffner, the man identified by federal authorities as theserial bank robber who struck in North Carolina, was arrested inMissouri September 12, the FBI told NC WANTED.

Schaffner, 37,originally from Indiana, is suspected of robbing 11 banks in 5 statesover the last four months, including 4 in North Carolina.

The FBIsource did not provide details of the arrest, but CNN and theAssociated Press are reporting that Schaffner was spotted by a retiredstate trooper at a motel in Kingdom City.

Schaffner's brazenstyle caught the attention of NC WANTED, who has been covering thismulti-state fugitive manhunt for weeks. He made no attempt to disguisehis identity in any of the robberies.

He faces charges in the following armed bank robberies:

-- May 15, 2009 at the United Services Credit Union in Fletcher, North Carolina

-- May 28, 2009 at the Wachovia Bank in Forest Acres, South Carolina

-- June 19, 2009 at the First National Bank in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

-- July 6, 2009 at the Lumbee National Bank in Fayetteville, North Carolina

-- July 15, 2009 at the Southern Bank in Edenton, North Carolina

-- July 29, 2009 at the First Citizen Bank in Hendersonville, North Carolina

-- August 10, 2009 at the First Palmetto Savings Bank in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

-- August 18, 2009 at the Community National Bank in Jefferson City, Tennessee
