They are going to tell you to get a new machine at the stores the techs there don't know 10 yr old machines. Save your docs. get new machine. Use from the run line msconfig and go thru your startup and services and uncheck anything that you don't use or recognize and apply or check the basic startup. If you suspect trojans etc. run MRT from the run line the malicious software removal tool. You probably have some dial up services trying to start but can't so you get a long boot up I suspect a resource issue, when your machine finally boots open task manager and look under performance and see how much memoryetc you have available. Another thing you can do is go to control panel-> system -> advanced-> performance settings-> optimize for performance. of course this is all assuming you have XP.... [ More ]

Also, I have registry mechanic from PC tools. A great piece of software rated number 1. It's only about 30 bucks every 6 months. But you can download it anyway cause they'll do a free scan. This way you can see the crap in there. Also, for free, they'll remove some of the stuff, but to get all of it, you'd have to purchase it. Hey, some is better than none..

Ok, good that you tried something. Try what I mentioned and see what happens. It's cheaper to buy Windows 7 for about 120 bucks and starting from scratch with a new OS, than spending another 4 hundred bucks or whatever. But try what I said first and see.

The laptop is almost 10-yrs old. I use kaspersky virus software. And you're probably sooo correct on the hidden trash that has attached itself to my poor faithful baby. lol I thought about taking it to Office Depot or Staples to get it de-bugged. But the idea of someone poking around in my faithful baby is sooooo off putting. But if that fixes my problem and allows me to keep it for another 10 to 20 years then I am all for it.

<br />Have you tried system restore?......I bet you have a ton of viruses and malware. Try installing Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free from the MS site. Run the full scan, it might take an hour or so but it's worth it. I'll bet is finds a ton of crap. Also install Spybot. That's also free. It finds hard to find tojans and other stuff that Essentials and regular registry cleaners won't find.

I heard that I might be eligible for all-I-mony!! lol<br />I am also in the process of putting together a class action lawsuit against FATE. lol<br />I figure if I get enough people we will probably be able to get enough to purchase a basket full of breadsticks at Olive Garden. lol

Ever heard of the saying,

If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have no luck at all.......

Well, there has been so many pieces of bad luck trying to set up housekeeping in my personal space for the past few months that I almost don't feel the love. lol

I haven't stopped coming to lottery post, my computer is giving me grief. lol

EX: I can come to this site, go to bed, wake up tomorrow morning and my computer will still be in the process of trying to open the screen.

No lie. I thought it was because I was still using my o-so-famoso back in the day dial-up service. (Telling my age) lol

So I upgraded to dsl/broadband or whatever it's called. I upgraded my browser and still the same.

Now when I turn on my notebook I can expect a wait time of about 8 minutes before my screen comes on. NO LIE!!!

It's just one thing after another.

Every piece of electronics in my life is losing it's ever loving electronic chippie mind!!!

Cell phone! Microwave! Desk Top! Notebook! Brain in Car! Stove! Washing Machine! TV! Cable Service! Printer! Dishwasher! Hell even the Garage door Opener!!

D amn!! Thank GOD I don't have a pacemaker!! If so I would be so screwed right now!!!

I know that I am going to have to give in and purchase a newer computer, but the idea of spending money because I have to and not because I want to is sooooooooo frustrating right now.

Trust me, I miss posting here at LP so much. I finally found time in my demented schedule to pop into the library and use their free service.

GOD knows that this is not something I relish doing. (I'm a privacy nutt)

The idea of morphing over to windows 7 makes my sphincter twitch.....

I am not looking forward to not being able to access my dos based programs because of windows 7 B.S..

Nor am I looking forward to spending more money to upgrade to windows professional just to be able to access my dos based software.

Sooooooooo not feeling the love right now.
