As for half-brother, Stephen - He'll just hit up Mom for a couple of dollars (or should I say pounds/euros)

Anyone know how the tax situation works in UK? I think in US, tax is paid by donor not the recipient. Make sense in this case - no need for Mom to pay taxes on such a nice $$$ gift.

<br

Grinning from ear to ear, the mum of lottery winner Dave Dawes has a million reasons to smile!!

For the modest life of this mum-of-five and grandmother of 13, seen here cheerily walking back to her flat after a shopping trip, is about to be transformed.

Jean Smith looks to be the latest relative to benefit from 101m EuroMillions winners Dave and fiancee Angela s pledge to make 20 family and friends millionaires.

As she waved goodbye to a taxi driver Jean, 69, politely declined to talk about her son s win.

But her smile said it all. And one of her neighbours in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, said: Dave s close to his mum and loves her dearly. I ve seen him down here a few times visiting her.

She s had a tough life and no doubt she was first on the list when it came to helping out loved ones who deserve it.

Factory supervisor Dave, 47, has already turned one of his two younger half-sisters into millionaires. Delighted Janet Marquis, 46, of Biggin Hill, Kent, said: We are very, very happy. I m not going to say how much he s giving us, but it ll be very well spent and will change our lives.

Dave and Angela, who live in a 70-a-week flat in Walsoken, Norfolk, were unveiled as the EuroMillions winners on Tuesday and ever since their pledge, relatives and pals have been waiting by their phones.

But Dave s skint older half-brother Stephen, who faces bankruptcy with debts of 24,000, said he doesn t expect to get a penny.

He is Jean s son by her first husband Jack Squirrell, who she married at 16 and left after just a year when Stephen was one. Squirrell is now in prison for sex assaults on two under-age girls.

After Squirrell, Jean went on to have Dave and his brother Denis with another man Denis Ryan.

But she split with him and three years later wed Alfred Dawes with Dave taking his stepfather s surname. Jean and Alfred had two daughters, Janet and Jackie.

Dave s stepdad died in 1988 and Jean went on to marry for the third time in 1990 to John Smith.

The extended family means Dave has countless relations scattered around the country.

His half-brother Stephen, 52, who lives with his disabled wife Terri-Anne in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, said: The last time I saw David was in 1987, but I would love to meet him again now!

I think there will be a lot of relatives trying to track him down.

Brought up by his gran, Stephen didn t even know he had a half-brother until their mum introduced them. He said: I don t think David was close to his mum then. He was shocked when he opened the door to her, then double-shocked to see me. He s a nice guy but we didn t stay in touch.

And while twice-married Dave and Angela contemplate how to spend their fortune, Stephen s just thinking about how to make ends meet.

He said: I borrow from Peter to pay Paul. I might have to declare myself bankrupt because I m struggling to pay the debts and our bills. I don t expect anything from Dave but if he wanted to help me I d really appreciate it.

... [ More ]
