I must say, I've enjoyed reading all the postings regarding the issue on tax withdrawals from the Prize winnings because I didn't know how the processed worked, and it's certainly important to me, as well. Most of you are Mathmatically Savvy and Tax Savvy. I'm taking notes.

Mike if you itemized deductions your tax man should have told you you could collect some of your lottery tax money back buy producing x amount of losing lottery tickets. I know you can do that in Maryland.

Maryland tax rules.

For prize payments over $5,000 taxes will be withheld as follows:

25.0% Federal Tax

7.5% State tax (Maryland residents)

5.0% State Tax (non-Maryland residents)

i won two 50 cent pick 4 straights in my state for 2,500 each.my tax advisor told me when i got my return that this was added to my total gross income and that due to me winning these it caused me to get a smaller return.instead of getting 6,000 back this year i got 4,000 back.all for winning the lottery in pick 4.was it worth it?,lol........

When I claimed the Pick 5 the check that came FROM THE LOTTERY HQ was 28% or thereabouts less than the amount shown on FILE CLAIM. Even if there's not withholding you'd get stuck with it the next April because it's income; they still send a tax form. Anything with FILE CLAIM means the taxes come out automatically before you even get a check! Any STR wins on Pick-4 (even just one) usually fall into that category.

I had asked what system he might have used. I am going to research that. Maybe he used tntea's VTRACs or based it on whatever came out the 2nd Sunday in Februrary in Kentucky. A bigger question is: does he usually spend $100/drawing? Or was he really sure about that number on that drawing? I'm assuming that was the only number he called in.

Well WI is one of those states. They withold 30% Fed and (I think 7% state) from anything over $599.00 according to their explanation.

A win of exactly $5000 is NOT subject to federal withholding. A few states do withhold at $600.

If it's similar to WI, a P4 straight for $1 gets you $5,000. And anything in the way of a prize that excedes $599 requires you to go to the Lottery Office to collect; no retailer will cash it. Therefore, even one straight P4 ticket cannot escape having taxes deducted from it.

I think it said he had 20 tickets. Here in WI, you can enter 5 possible plays on one ticket ($5.00 per ticket max). Therefore, he could have twenty tickets, with the same combo on them 100 times total. Cost, yeah; $100.00 But it comes out.

As a Marylander ...and resident of Montgmery County, I say Congrats to Him!!!!!!!!

I know where he purchased his tickets, as I know his area like the items in my Medicine Cabinet. What better news than to read that 'my neighbor' just won big$$$$$$$$. I am inspired. I travel and walk all over the Bel Pre Neighborhoods, and shop in those Malls and Stores, and I am very happy for him. It's great to see a fellow county resident win. There are some players that will play only one number for a large amount every drawing straight until it hits. Right now in Delaware someone is playing for the night draw only about $70 straight on 1947. Being a small state , they have a low cutoff of $350,000. Every night this number is cutoff, so I know that it is almost certainly one person that is doing it, though there are bound to be a few others that play that number also. This person just buys up all that he can around 5:30 every night.

It didn't say how he chose the numbers, if he used any algorithms or just favorite numbers. REMEBER, HE WON MIDDAY AND ALSO ANOTHER TIME BEFORE. For every person that wins big like that there are thousands more who spend $100/day and only win back a fraction of it over a long time. With algorithms you have a better shot. I watched a whale in Tunica at the Grand one night in 1998, the pit boss brought him a tray worth $250,000.00 and he was at a table by himself playing $17,500 a shot on Roulete, after losing 4 spins in a row he lost $70,000, then he hit the red 25 twice in a row and walked out with $1,242,500.00, I guess ya just have to pick a set of numbers and stick with em, never play if you can't afford to lose. $100 straight on a pick 4 seems really risky. I doubt this is the first time this person played that way. Hopefully he won't keep it up as a daily habit to try to repeat his winning.

I should be so lucky if my p4 loser number comes out i'll get 25 g's. I kills me that some people have that kind of luck. Once in a while when my pick looks like it might come in i'll put 10 or 20 on it. Got it boxed a lot of times but it has never hit straight. I wonder if this guy is a poster maybe he'll let us in on his method. I cant zero in on a pick 4 straight to save my butt.

He spent $100 on the same number. That is kinda step but I guess well worth it hey.

I have been trying to do the same thing myself but with only $10. And I am playing it two way. That will be over $26,000 if it comes up straigh and $2400 if it comes up box. Hopefully my numbers will come up like his did soon. haha

A Silver Spring, Maryland, man won $500,000 in Wednesday evening's Maryland Pick 4 drawing playing twenty tickets.

This is the second big win for him. In 1997, he won $250,000 playing Pick 4.

I told the Lottery official back then that I would be back and here I am, he said.

The winner also hit midday that same day for $3000. The office manager of a contracting company was home sick on Wednesday and called the store to put in his evening numbers.
