Frist Fails to Piggyback I-Gaming Bill

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's effort to attach prohibitive online gambling legislation to the FY 2007 Defense Department Conference Report (DCR 07) has yet to materialize. The conference committee on the Department of Defense (DOD) authorization bill reportedly removed Leach-type language from the bill.

Konane, once again a good argument for the Fair Tax Act.

If you win money with these gambling entities, it will be taxed when you spend that money. Makes a helluva lot of sense to me.

What is the confusion with this concept? I'm a poor person and I don't spend much money because I don't make much money so any argument saying this is going to hurt poor people is specious. Here's the Nightline segment about internet gambling I saw the other night. They implied it's all about doing business and not paying taxes, likely withholding US taxes and paying up like state lotteries do.

I signed up to betslips and without a problem, the only thing I need is a job to fill the account lol...well, don't know bout you guys but you can continue to complain about an issue that has nothing to do with you making money now, or you can just continue to have fun playing the lottery online...it seems that alot more people then I thought chose the 1st option instead.

It has nothing to do with it .... but I've been incensed many times in the past when stupid legislation and pork Democrats stealthily attached to other bills and voted on in the middle of the night have become law. So if it passes I suppose people are going to have to adapt. That's the way Washington works like it or not.

Last night on Nightline there was a segment about internet gambling. It seems to boil down to due to racketeering laws passed against gambling across state lines, companies doing business offshore are not registered in the US to conduct business because it's illegal, therefore not collecting/paying taxes, either corporate or personal.

Coupled with banking pushing for this law, makes sense and is logical although many don't like it.

This reminds me of the case of Ralph Reed - the religious right leader - who opposed gambling casinos because he was being paid by the convicted felon Jack Abrahamoff who was a lobbyist for Indian casinos. It turns out that Reed's opposition to gambling was really a front for trying to keep the Indian casinos from facing competition. There were no moral issues. It was all about being paid off.

If your bill can not go thru on its own attach it to a priority bill.

Frist would sell his mother on a street corner in Harlem if he thought it would get him the presidential nod from the Republican Party. I'd be willing to bet the credit card lobby is not in his corner on this one. The only reason he is doing this is to build street credit with the religious right. Also read there is a 1961 (believe that's the year) ban on gambling across state lines they're hoping to get clarified by this legislation.

On the bright side once clarified and put into place perhaps online ticket purchases within state will become possible. Georgia has such a proposal but has been tabled for a couple of years.

News report out of National Journal (a political publication following Hill action)

According to an aide, Frist has decided to push for a truncated version of the House bill that would bar banks and credit card companies from processing payments for online bets and make it a crime for a gambling business to accept credit cards, wire transfers or any other bank instrument to process payments for illegal gaming transactions.

To save my life I can't get a handle on the real reason for the ban other than maxing credit cards which are unsecured and walking away OR being unable to effectively collect taxes on winnings OR profits being used to fund terrorism or organized crime.

this could actually work out better in the long run if we let him put in the laws about the credit card.i think he knows the real internet gambling bill won't pass so he is looking to pass something even if it is small so he can pacify the ones who are looking to outlaw the whole thing.he might win the battle but he will lose the war on this....
