My co-workers weren't in the 55% bracket but in the 25%-32% bracket and they weren't willing to be out $50-$75 for co-workers who were making good money. They just preferred if they were going to be out any money it helped a college student of one of the pool members and everybody was happy with that idea. I'm sure had the pool been willing to set aside 35% of the prize money to paid the extra taxes someone in the pool would have cashed in the ticket.

Rjoh, thank you for filling in the fact that your group was well to do prior. Not sure how your co workers had to end up paying out 55% in federal tax, but hey, they must of worked aLOT of overtime. In my state they pre-deduct the first 25% of federal so a person doesnt have to pay such high amounts ...So if your associates had to pay in 30% more for a jackpot claim after having the first 25% deducted,Id suggest getting a new accountant or finding a better calculator. Federal is capped between

That's what I was saying in my above post, RJOh. The whole story sounds a bit fishy to me. By the way, I saw Judge Judy on Larry King a couple of times and was very impressed with her, although I really haven't followed her tv show.

On another subject, it's interesting that you brought up Judge Judy. We're always talking about what it would be like to be wealthy famous after winning the lottery. According to Forbes, Judge Judy earned $28 million in 2005 (and I'm not including the incom... [ More ]

I think once the full story comes out, it may reveal both the store owner and the customer had dirty hands. We gain interest and at the same time the claimant is covered. It can be done. And yes we divied the difference once received at the bank.

This whole story sounds odd.

I would agree with you, except if she was trying to hide the fact that she won by selling the ticket, why would she then call and report it, especially after she got all of her money? If she got $600 as the article reports, and then she went back for $300 more and then another $100, it doesn't make any sense. If the store clerk paid her the entire $1,000 then he would have to pay taxes when he cashed in the ticket, so he would lose money
