I do think this is a bunch a *#@^!

This appears to be a case of too many redundant systems.

First, you have the Lottery (GTECH) gaming system - by the reports I got, it handled the wagers and the reprocessing and winner selection just fine. Apparently, the problems started with the Lottery ICS and (relatively new) auditing systems not being fast enough to synch with the large transaction volume to be processed (or in their case, reprocessed).

Among MM states, Massachusetts is tied for 2nd lowest population, with Washington. Maryland is the smallest, but catching up quickly.

Is it a surprise that Mass. didn't have a 5+0 winner? No.

Does that mean your odds would've been better in California or New York? No.

Don't give up! But make sure that you're playing for fun.

Not even a second price in massachusetts. this was the last time i play MM, it doest matter how much you try how much money you lose playing you are never going to win the JP and you are never going to win the second tier and might never even win third price

You have a point, Todd. Believe me, I wouldn't complain if I had won in GA, but now the news is saying the jackpot was $390 million or $116.5 million cash for each winner. So that's just about $7 million in state tax! 116.5 x 6% = 6,990,000

Does anyone else find it interesting that Ohio, the same state known to have had frequent mega millions winners in the past, balances the books for this lottery? I know the game is totally random, but at the very least, it is a strange coincidence.

Thanks for the prize breakdown, Raven.

Looks like Californians got a relatively fair shake on the pari-mutuel prizes.

45 tickets matched all five numbers. With 46 mega balls and plenty of repeat numbers, it's easy to see how the jackpot could have rolled if a different gold number had come up.

They may not make 50% when the jackpot is hit on the first roll, but it's very unlikely that the lottery would be in the red. The lowest that ticket sales have been since CA joined is a bit over $13 million. The expected payout for smaller prizes is only 18%, which would leave more than $10.5 million which is more than enough to pay the jackpot and expenses.

Miss NYC...that $100 million is still in our pockets. There never was $100 million. That was the estimated jackpot based upon sales for today through Friday.

Intererstig to note, if the jackpot (of $12 million) where to hit on the next draw, the lotteries would actually be in the red for Friday's draw. I'm sure they could use some of the money from the last run to make it up. The lotteries take a chance by starting out at $12 million and have caught up by the second draw.

I know!!! It should have at least gone to $15 million. I keep saying that these lotteries need to focus on high jackpots. People who want better odds with smaller prizes should just play something else. The crazy odds in this game make no difference to people once the pot grows so large and sales would probably be high on an average rate. I have a question though...if if rolled until Friday, it would have been $470 mil, now it's $15 mil, and the winners split $370 mil....so where did that $100 m... [ More ]

If it was me... I would form a blind trust and let my attorney take care of it!...if, I had the winning ticket...which I don't!!!

The reason for my earlier post was that we are a lotto retailer and some of our customers were very upset with the fact that the smaller winning tickets could not be cashed until after 11 am. I'm sitting here watching CNN Headline news. I'm thinking it must be really hard to claim this prize anonymously with all the press. I think if it was me I'de wait a month or so to claim the prize. What would be the rush to claim it, you've already done the impossible by winning. I'de sign the back and put it in a safety deposit box and wait for things to die down.

Wow! Here it is almost 9:30 am on 03/07/07 and California still can't get it together to allow venders to cash any winning tickets... They can be checked, but the machine says that they cannot be paid. Is this any way to run a multibillion dollar enterprise? What ever happened to no fault computing ... Hey, how about some reduntant systems? ... like the airlines... and even they process more data than the lottery... and they do it 24/7... come on CA show us why we pay such high commissions and... A couple of thoughts:

The NJ winner will pay no state tax on their prize, but the Georgia player will pay an extra 6% state tax on their prize.

If someone wins a share of the jackpot from California, they won't pay any state tax on the prize.

Also, Times Square continues it's winning streak. Times Square is the place where jackpots go to die.

Looks like the winners can't be anonymous.......

At least in Nebraska last year when the Powerball was $365 million, the winning ticket was shared a group of people, so the general public couldn't target a particular person. Fortunately, that group is doing just fine. Let's just hope that the winners are careful.

The best I did was a 3+0. I snagged it using that Mega Millions wheel I always talk about. It is the most consistent way I have found to win something.

California system problem delays reporting of matching ticket data from that state

Ohio Lottery spokeswoman Mardele Cohen says New Jersey and Georgia told the state they sold one winning ticket each for the U.S. record $370 million jackpot.

She says the other states call in their results because Ohio balances the books in the 12-state game.

Because of a system problem, results from California are not yet in.
