Yep, if it is rust then dump it. I had to get rid of a car because I got home and pulled into park and put the emergency brake on and the seat went backwards through the floorboard! Turns out the emergency brake cable guide was anchored to one of the bolts on the front seat and the floorboards were rusted really bad.

Or maybe she already has a working exhaust system, in which case holes in the floorboards are about as dangerous as opening your windows. OTOH, if the holes are caused by rust, I'd be concerned about the adjacent areas that hadn't rusted all the way through yet, and the possibility that the floor could fail. Either way, I doubt that it would be worth the cost of fixing any significant holes in a Cavalier that's 15 years old. Even in really good shape she'd be lucky if it's worth $1000.... [ More ]

Even $10K can greatly alter your life if you buy a car with it and not have payments for several years.

You should have a realistic goal of what you actually need to make your life what you would be happy with. I would want enough to buy a house and a car and 6 mo. of emergency funds equal to what I normally would have anyway. A decent win on the Jersey Cash 5 would do it. I have a shot at that. I got close last month.

My car is 9, My TV is 26 (probably older than many people here). I have clothes older than the TV.

I'd move somewhere with a washer and dryer a dishwasher and where I could have pets.

But I certainly wouldn't buy a new car that I had to pay lots of insurance on. Or, for that matter, any crap that I would probably be tripping over.

I only suggested she get a newer vehicle because hers is a rolling death trap.Cars that have holes in the floorboard tend to have exhaust leaks which can be deadly.Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. If a person has the money, which she obviously does, they should either repair the car or replace it.Most states have inspections to take dangerous junk cars off of the roads. Its one thing to risk your own life, but to risk the lives of your children by driving an unsafe car is criminal.

I would probably be a lot like this lady, keep a lot of stuff the same...just upgrade my quality of life by spending my time how I want rather than using my money to buy more stuff because people/society think I should have it. My truck has over 450 thousand miles on it and it still keeps on going. Dealerships call me once a month to see if its still moving. I figure it's cheaper to replace parts than pay a note on a new one plus the insurance. I figure I'll replace it one day but I'd like to hi... [ More ]

A million dollars is not even worth a million dollars anymore and after taxes it only came up to about $670,0000. That is still alot of money but not enough money to quit your day job! If a person wanted that could go through that money in 6 months. It's a good idea just to bee frugal and get a good used car and put the rest in moderately safe investments.

Ah, lady after my own heart!

The amount she won wasn't all that much. Even if I won the Mega Millions I would be in no hurry to replace my 1992 vehicle. As I see it, a vehicle is simply a means of transportation and if it gets a person from one place to another it is doing its job. There are much more interesting, as well as more important, things on which to spend one's money IMO.

To each his own.
