1. the most amazing part of the story is, there was a big winner in WV, and it was not Jack Whittaker (again).

2. One digit off would only apply to a computerized game like Hot Lotto, where an RNG may have almost picked the other digit. In a ball draw like Powerball the number they needed may have been close to the chute OR may have been way on the other side when the chute opened. The only other place one digit off is meaningful is on the Pick-4, if you missed one of the digits. Then again,

They won A million not millions and that's before taxes which if they are in a 35% tax bracket makes $650K

It was nice for the couple to give the clerk something but I would have given that clerk $1000.00 seeing that they won millions!!!!!! But I am glad they gave the clerk anything at all.

I think a pack of gum or a candy bar makes a nice gift for the clerk that sold the winning ticket. I'll have to remember that if I ever win big.

The winning ticket purchased by the Prouds had the numbers 4-36-40-44-52. The Powerball on their ticket was 3. The Powerball number drawn was 3'3', meaning they missed the $125 million jackpot by a single digit.

I believe they meant the extra digit 3 by the initial 3 they had...

Great win for the couple.. I bet the Prouds were proud.. NO pun intended...

I realize that large lottery prize winners aren't required to 'gift' their winning lottery ticket printing clerk. Yet, if the winner lives in and purchased in a state where all winner's names and residence city gets automatically published -- and the winner is rather certain that the clerk will know who the name belongs to -- I think it would be delightful for the clerk (in private) to receive a meaningful token amount $100- $1000 (depends upon the winning amount, of course... The Proud's must be very proud. Even I'm proud of the Proud's and I'm proud to say it proudly. I take great pride in that.

I do have one question though.

Who determined their Powerball number 3 was only a single digit away from the actual Powerball number of 33?

I'm no math whiz but isn't that 30 digits away

Frank and Patricia Proud of Durbin are $1 million richer from a Powerball ticket purchased at Trent's General Store at Bartow in Pocahontas County.

At a press conference at Lottery headquarters in Charleston on Thursday afternoon, the couple expressed appreciation for Francine Lambert, who sold them the winning ticket.

Francine always sells us our tickets, Frank said. She always tells me if I win I can buy her a pack of gum.
