If a major lottery prize is not claimed within a week or two in UK, it will most likely never be claimed. We have the same 180-day time period for a claim.

Only then, will the lottery operator reveal the location where the winning ticket was purchased and make reasonable attempt to attract the attention of residents in the area. Unclaimed prizes are also displayed on their website, but I doubt anyone who didn't bother to check their tickets would look there.

My state has no such benefit, they would splash your name and picture at every conceivable space..um ok maybe I exaggeratted a little but you get what I am saying.

Delaware has complete anonymity

If you are self appoint yourself as trustee, you lose protection of the assets should you get sued. This is why trusts are set up....protection of the assets.

If there is a person you can trust, like a family member, you can have co-trustees , the lawyer and that person.

It is hard to wrap your head around having someone else own the assets as in the case of a trust, but it is better than having someone sue you and they then own the assets.

Congrats to the winners for sure whoever they may be. If i won that much money i would be in shock and thank GOD for answering my prayers. I would not tell anyone and keep it a big secret. I'd probably buy a house in Beverly Hills to be around other rich people to blend in....I would definitely disappear from Ohio for good and contact my cousins after I got all set up. There are so many people who commute to Columbus, Ohio and pass by that store on the way.....i even pass by that store when I go to Columbus. I am guessing it is someone who commutes to Columbus everyday to go to work.

VERY smart winner. An LPer, no doubt. A trust, blind or irrevocable, is definitely the way to go, but I don't know how I feel about giving a lawyer that much authority/power over my prize. They're like a bad spouse: once they've got their hooks in ya'.....

Personally, I don't have the will power to wait more than a month to collect. I'd definitely wait at least a week, though.

many times people will find out who you are even if you claim anonymously because of where the ticket was sold which should be near your vicinity...

Each state has its own rules for lottery games even for the same games, that's the reason California's MM payouts are different than other MM states.

i thought you had to get your prize jackpot in public?? i remember sending a email to the new york lottery and they replied that the only way to receive your prize is in public with the press......

I'm guessing it was to get everything in order, such as the blind trust and probably hiring a good financial team.

If I were to win I'd probably wait 2-4 months (we have 6 months to claim it here) just so that some of the interest in who won had died down and also to get plans in order.

The thing though is I'm pretty sure if the state allows you to claim it privately they still have to give your name out to anyone who requests the info. That would be good enough for me as it would keep a majority of the people from knowing I won.

I trust the whole process with PB and MM with the Blind Trust thing.

I'm not so trusting when the Blind Trust thing is done through a state lottery with one of their own games.

Those folks in Ohio are pretty smart...This has happend a couple times before in Ohio with large Mega Millions Jackpots. Can't wait until it's my jackpot!!!

Hopefully I will keep my head and remember my plan.......It would be diffic ult to fight the urge to run right to the Lottery Commission and claim my money.

While the money would come in handy immediately, I would work out an arrangement with counsel to handle this so that loss of privacy is not an inconvenience for the rest of my life. To hell with the leeches.

Uses blind trust to keep privacy

The holder of Ohio's first Powerball jackpot prize ticket came forward Tuesday to claim the $260 million prize in a blind trust.

The drawing for the $260 million jackpot was Wednesday, June 2, and the winning ticket was sold at Hub Carryout in Sunbury.

George M. Hoffman, of Columbus, is trustee of The 2010 Blind Trust and made the claim on behalf of the winner at Lottery offices in Cleveland.
