Ohio and California chose not to sponsor crime, maybe there will be more on the list. Of course a multi-million winner can afford to change the name and hit the road, but $52 000 windfall is a perfect target.

Jean-Pierre Roy of Loto-Quebec said he doesn't think publication of the winners' information prompts crime against them, and that people should be able to see the faces and names of the winners to see the money is being won by real people.

Masciotra said the lottery publicized her mother's name, photograph, that she won $52,000 and that she lives in the Montreal region.

That's enough information for find her, but then robbers would have to assume she stuffed her mattress with the money after cashing the check. Her daughter said the robbers asked about a specific bracelet so she probably was robbed by someone that knew her before she won.

Here are some tips to avoid such situations:

Do Not claim your Prize right after the Winning Ticket is known: it is very tempting to go and collect your winnings, but you are better off waiting for a while (maybe a few months)

Do Not be too vocal about your Win: You don't want the attention! ..because it is mostly the wrong kind of attention..

After collecting the Prize, deposit the money in a new Bank Account: Do Not keep the cash at home, or you'd be asking for trouble..

I totally agree, there is no reason for the Lottery to publish your name or address for winning a lottery. As long as as it's done the right way and legally and as long as they're above reproach then it's totally uneccesary ....

I see no reason why winners cannot be anonymous. Lotteries should be independently audited to assure that everything is above board. This choice of remaining anonymous is important in today s paradigm of the Greed of Envy

This is once again greed doing what it does best.

Rear it's ugly head and taint those around it.

Just goes to show that you can't share good news with everyone.

The moral of this story and every story like this is, go in disguise or have the jackpot claimed incognito under the name of an LLC or something.

The daughter of a Canadian lottery winner said she believes her mother was robbed and beaten because information was published about the winner.

Diana Masciotra, the daughter of Evelyn Cassis of Kirkland, Quebec, asked Loto-Quebec, the Quebec lottery to stop publishing information about her mother after Cassis was attacked in her home following her $52,000 lottery win, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday.
