Yeah this type of stuff happens occasionally. Approximately equal to the odds, but that is over a long enough sample. I bet if you combined all of the States' data, you'd find that this stuff happens pretty much as often as it should.

I remember a Pick 3 draw that I couldn't figure out why it stuck out to me, it wasn't a number I had ever played, then I realized that the the number drawn was that day's date. And with NJ's parimutual pay, the win was small.

I love this part..

The Multi-State Lottery Association, which makes the payouts in the Powerball and Mega Millions drawings, does not have a cap on ticket sales, said Executive Director Charles Strutt. But that policy has caused some anxiety.

In 2005, several hundred people across multiple states picked five winning numbers using the numbers found in fortune cookies that all were shipped from the same New York bakery, forcing the lottery to spend some $19 million from a $25 million ca... [ More ]

111 was drawn in the Ohio pick-3 game on January 11, 1982 and though rare, significant date numbers are drawn. The odds of winning by betting a buck on 1111 or 111 last Friday were exactly the same as betting any other number. The final score of the Ohio State - Michigan football game was drawn in the Ohio pick-4 game 20 minutes after the game ended a few years ago too.

It happens.
