Do you have any problems with laws that penalize you if you knowingly buy stolen property? It's basically the same thing. The proposal had no requirement for clerks to try and find out if somebody is on welfare or in bankruptcy. It would only have been illegal if they know the person is on welfare or in bankruptcy.

IMHO, it would make more sense to simply prohibit selling lottery tickets to anybody using benefits to buy other items. Sure there may be a few people who are buying tickets (or ci... [ More ]

Unfortunately it's too easy and dirt cheap to make a kid. Then the government gives you a fat tax deduction if you've got income, plus a gift of $1000 for each kid. That's one of the things that make it possible to earn enough to get by and still not pay any income taxes.

Geez, JMBrown, these people ARE reading the bible, and/or all other high-paying membership driven religion's studyguides which encourage their followers to breed crazy/selfish/cruel/unsustainable people amounts. The outcome is that poverty, unhappy/under-winning regular weekly gambling, unemployment, and underemployment continue to exist worldwide for 120+ years. These BIG, expensive, distractions prevent adult people from doing anything against their government's unjust/extravagant endeavors... [ More ]

You will not be on the top all the time bad things happen to all of us . I'm not saying abuse the system but read your bible and you will see not everyone is going to be on top.Remember if you hit bottom and the one lottery ticket is what helps you.

Whats sad about the story is that it can't stop these people from playing obviously, but it can stop them from collecting any winnings over $600. At christmas time many families put scratch tickets and powerball drawings in family members stockings and what not. Now if some poor sap actually hits one of these things but is on assistance, they themselves won't be able to cash it in for themselves. If they get away with this, they will go after all the people over the age of 65 on social security... [ More ]

Good argument on both sides of the spectrum here, guys. Sure, it is the so-called government money that we pay with our taxes. However, the lottery can't physically destroy you. Tobacco and alcohol physically destroy you. The lottery can only mentally destroy you. I can go through all of that with a lengthy post, but I'll have to save it for now. But yeah, I can completely understand the argument as to why these people who rely on all sorts of government assistance shouldn't be allowed to spend... [ More ]

This reads fair, zephbe, as long as the lottery headquarters only checks and withdraws these monies for an individual who wins over $250K gross.

Why would they ban the poor?

I seen where a government agency declared someone mentaly incompetent to take care of their own financial affairs when they were asked if they played the lottery. The person replied he played like maybe 5 or ten dollars every 2 weeks on the lottery. The goernment agency declared him having a gambling problem and his financial affairs received from that agency was put into the hands of a guardian.

The government will do what they want when they want.

This will be a very big joke for America. first and foremost what makes any one think they can also stop their crack head girlfriends not on welfare from buying the ticket for them. And secondly by banning them from playing the govement is taking away an easy way to get their a.. off welfare and actually have them pay back taxes. Hello is anyone thinking here lol
