I think this is one of the best parts of their whole plan:

They just walked right through the door, Dougherty said. They didn't give anyone a heads-up. We were just as shocked as anyone else. They went up to our front desk to check in to see what they needed to do.

There was just an article about a local company who provides financial and law services to people worth 20 - 500 million. Much more than 500 million, and I guess you should have your own team. Anyway, they said they charge around 1% for the smaller portfolios, less for the larger ones.

You could not be more wrong. She had no choice in the matter.

Except for 5 states (and Florida isn't one of them), you cannot anonymously claim your winnings.

If you want to get the money, you have to allow them to release your name.

In some states they even require you to give a press conference. Luckily Florida doesn't go that far. But her identity still has to be disclosed.

She stepped forward and said it probably wasn't meant to be, but I agree with you. I'd be in shock. Perhaps if she can prove she is the person who was polite to the elderly winner (which won't be difficult, since each ticket has the exact time on it, there are surveillance cameras, etc.) the winner will share some of her money. I would. Even a mere 1% is over $2 million.

Someone in this site suggested first that the lottery winner was a group of people and that it was impossible for one person to win it. Then he/she claimed that the Jackpot wouldn't increase to over 500 mil. Talk about irony. This was probably the Florida Lottery's attempt at more publicity. They had not even left the offices, and there was a lot of media already. That isn't cool. But, to be fair, I think there was media camped out on the likely chance that the winner would come there to claim it. A pretty sleazy move on the part of the Florida lottery. They couldn't get her to attend the optional press conference, so they told the media what day she would be at the lottery office to fill out paper work, so the media can snap photos of her on the way to her car.

I can see other state lotteries doing this same tactic. If you ever win big and they tell you to come to the office to fill out paper work, be sure to bring a ski mask for the long walk back to your car.

What's great about winning the lottery is that regular people can win and become bloody rich.

The local news just had a segment about the son who lives here in Jax on the 10PM news. They had a live remote at the house and it looked like they were not the only news crew there. The house, modest and small, now has a cardboard No Tresspassing sign taped near the front door. The report indicated earlier that the lady who won would be staying with her son for a while. Neither was there and a family representative staying at the house had no comment (a wise move).
