That's so unfair! They should stop selling tickets if they are not going to give the winnings anyways. I don't think players will tolerate this. If I am in their state I would rather play lottery in other state.

The federal govt will not allow the District of Columbia to pay. The lottery winners have to wait just like the SCHOOLS, POLICE, FIRE, EMS, MEDICAID, TRASH PICKUP.

What DC lacks is the RIGHT TO VOTE. What CONGRESS lacks is leadership. DC residents cant and did not vote for any of them.

DC leaders have been using the unspent money from 2013 but are prohibited by federal law from using its 1.4 billion local rainy day fund.

MD and VA are paying for the subway since DC was ordered not to pay them along with FIRE, EMS, SCHOOLS ANS DOCTORS.

Virginia voted for these people that caused this.DC doesnt have the right to vote.

And the federal payment to the city in lieu of a vote will have to increase to make upthe shotfall

MD and VA are paying more for running the subway system since DC has been ordered not to pay for it either,not really a big deal. But the Federal Payment from all 50 states will increase if lottery revenue is severely impacted.

Find my other posts/replies. The city govt is prohibited by federal law and ordered by congress from paying until the shutdown is over. So there is no lawsuit. This includes paying :

SCHOOLS

POLICE / FIRE /EMS

SUBWAY SYSTEM

DOCTORS AND HOSPITAL MEDICAID PAYMENT

Remember that if people dont play the DC(city) lottery then the federal payment from all 50 states to the city will be increased. Because the residents of DC have no congressmen or senators that can vote.

The profits go to the local schools and city services likeanywhere else. BTW the PUBLIC SCHOOLS the SUBWAY and MEDICAID payments are also nonessential so the money waits until the federal govt gets its act together.

Actually all lottery sales are paid out of the lottery terminals. If a store wants to pay the winners and wait for the lottery to pay them back, they could if they wanted.

Lottery terminals are always seperate from other store terminals for that reason.

The article is wrong. The city government is funded 100 percent by local taxes. The federal government must then give permission to the city to spend its own money. The federal approporiation is a partial reimbursement of the tax money collected by the federal government because the City does not have the right to vote.

No where else in the country has to wait for that permission to spend its own money.

The only affected payoffs are those cashed at lottery headquarters and those wins are usually over $5000. There are LP members in panic because they don't know they can still cash their free scratch-off tickets at the store where they bought them.

Somehow this idea will be catchy. Who will be the next state to follow suit?...or is this just because it's DC? I highly doubt it.

Keep more for themselves by saying they can't pay out yet keep collecting? WHO does that? I hope those that can't travel won't

That sucks a monkey's hairy nutsack for DC players. Though Maryland and Virginia players will welcome those players. DC as a whole is smaller than Rhode Island, so it's not gonna be that much of a drive. It's still worse than a two or three minute jog to the nearest conveinence store, but yeah.

I see a big law suit in the making. It's like saying I am not going to pay any taxes due to the federal government until the shutdown is over. What has the lottery to do with the Federal Government??????????? I would highly recommend any lottery player to buy their tickets in any of the neighboring States. Hell, I live in Illinois I can smell the bull#*#@* from the D.C. Lottery right here.

What if you have winning tickets and the shutdown lasts longer then the redeem by date to get your money? Not likely to

happen, but the way it's going one never knows.

All they have done is shutdown services to affect only us, not them! This is nothing but smoke and mirrors. I would let it stay shut down, and just to protest I would recommend everyone stop buying lottery tickets until they stop taking it out on us.

This seems to only be affecting winning tickets that have not yet been redeemed. Those who are already receiving payments via annuity should be fine, but given that our income tax rates can only go upwards, I would be more inclined to take lump sum payout...and blow 5 percent right off the bat just to get big baller spending out the way. oh come on DC!!! I feel embarassed to say I work in DC now. I decided to buy my PB and MM ticket at home in VA just to protest. So if I win, I will not be able to claim via a trust and everyone will know my name but I will get paid timely. VA has been on a roll with 2nd place winners anyway.

If you are furloughed because of the shutdown and thought maybe a DC Lottery ticket might solve your problems, you are out of luck.

The DC Lottery announced Friday that they would not be paying out any winning lottery tickets until after the shutdown is over.

Due to the federal government shutdown, the DC Lottery has suspended the redemption of winning DC Lottery tickets until further notice, reads a notice on the DC Lottery website. Winning tickets will be paid out after the shutdown.
