California has the biggest population (around 39M peeps) therefore it's never surprising that someone wins from CA.

Florida is ranked number 3 on the list (around 20M peeps) in population, again not a surprise here. (note that New York has around the same amount of peeps)

What? How do you get those numbers? $50,000 after 25% deduction is like $37,500 not no $13,903. You are not taxed at the highest rate unless you win A LOT. Even at 36% it would still be like $32,000. CA also has no state tax on the lottery. I know they have higher taxes for the super wealthy though.

Probably around that for the annuity. Had no one matched all of the numbers drawn lottery officials said the next jackpot would have reached $2 billion. The $1.5 billion prize would be paid in annual payments over 29 years or the winner could opt for a lump-sum payment of $930 million. Dive that by 3 is about $310 million cash before taxes. Yeah we had more PB winners than any state at 16 I think, maybe more by now as that was 3 years ago. But never the huge one. I won $100 on the raffle awhile back buying one ticket. Missed $1,000 by two numbers. Most of the time they are a waste of $20. The game I want to win most if Cash4life as $1,000 a day for life would be all I need, or $365,000 annually which is about $273,000 a year for life. I can live with that lol. Then play the big ones once in awhile still.

Lots of million dollar 2nd prize match-5 winners for sure, but none in California. The 12 California winners lost out and will only receive $638,146. Still a bundle though.

It's even worse for CA 3rd tier winners who instead of receiving $50,000 will only get about 1/4 that: $13,903.

On the bright side, all those winners, presumably, won far more than they wagered on the drawing, defying the odds.

The problem is that it is really hard to justify playing for $40 million and up as this drawing showed how hard it is to win so most will just wait until it clombs up again which will make it a long slow climb. Point is Powerball isn't just difficult, it's near impossible to win. For players wagering small amounts, it's simply entertainment - most fully expect to lose, or at best, win a few dollars. Casual players are, in large part, who drive large jackpots. Don't know why it is, whether people buy a subscription, people cash in and buy more tickets, or people buy tickets for the big jackpot late, but the $40 jackpot after a nice run has healthy sales typically.

Many will play now as it is more of a relief and less burden and you won't be so famous if you win $40 million. But it makes more sense cost wise to play MB's for better odds and only paying half as much. I would love to win the $40 million though next draw so I would be completely anonymous while they are still looking for the $1.6 billion winner. But the cost is not worth it as much as the MB now. So they would be smart not to change it.

Yeah like that story on The Curse Of The Lottery where the Nebraska meatpacking plant workers won (8 of them) and the guys they put in charge of purchasing the tickets were immigrants, one from Vietnam (who had the tickets in hand when they won) and the other a dude from the Congo. hell you actually asked! of course you can, I wouldn't post the numbers if I was actually as selfish as I make out to be. Personally i wouldn't play those numbers as im really unlucky, and you're guaranteed not to win anything just like I do. my real advice is what ever you play try not to repeat any numbers, and cover as many of the whole set of possible numbers as possible. ie dont buy the same numbers multiple times, unless you are trying to annoy your ex.

Anyone ever have this happen? I asked the clerk for five Powerball quick picks, she hits the button but they didn't print. She checks the terminal and says the numbers were generated but wouldn't print. She tries several different things trying to get them to print without success. The clerk then calls her manager. If I for sure knew the winning numbers, I'd buy 10 or 12 tickets with the same numbers to make sure I got a majority share even if 1 or 2 other tickets were sold. That would make it easier to get most of the money to the charities of your choice without paying taxes. Just send them the tickets anonymously, and pay taxes only on the one ticket that I claim for myself.
