The credit for the accuracy of those numbers doesn't go to me. They're from the Texas Lottery, which publishes a breakdown of the jackpot. It's prepared the day before the drawing, but I'm not sure I've ever seen it earlier than the afternoon of the drawing date.

And if it rolls tonight we'll see a whopping increase to $422 million (cash value of 291.8). Since the recent MM run only went from 390 to 415 I'm not even optimistic about the chances for the final tally to make it past 425.

It's just like your paycheck: your company withholds a certain amount from your paycheck, and then on April 15 the following year you either owe more (because they didn't withhold enough) or you get a refund (if they withheld too much).

The lottery automatically withholds the amount shown on the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega, and then on April 15 you'll probably owe some more, because they don't usually withhold enough at the time you were initially paid out.

Very good point....we too, have a contingency plan in place on how we'd collect a big win and what we would not do. I'd imagine that there'd be a change in blood pressure the moment one realizes they won a big one and would collapse to the floor. Even involuntarly up-chucking. Prize is taxed as ordinary income.

So, just like employers withholding for taxes from a paycheck, the lottery withholds 25% for Federal taxes (assuming you are citizen) when they award the prize. That would happen this year, assuming you claimed this year.

You will still owe the balance of income taxes next April when you file your annual tax return. For a prize this size you would fall into the highest bracket of 39.6%. For simplicity most people calculate the ~40% taxes off the top when

A few years ago we did a European delivery for an automobile that we had ordered and were given a 15 day tag to tour Europe. We spent time in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France and Belgium. It was nice to tour all these countries and absorb all they had to offer while at the same time getting acclimated to our new vehicle. It will most likely be the next decade before we have have an opportunity to go back.

Thanks for the tip about LLC's. In KY you have to fill out some kind of form yearly, so I guess it can't be fictitious. Will have to investigate FLP. I'm curious about the many LLC winners on different lottery sites; perhaps they already owned some kind of business or company. We'll never know.
