its funny, how politicians will use religion as a deterrant whenever it is most conveinant.

how can anyone use the church as an advocate against the lottery when bingo for bucks

is rolling through the bible belt like a freight train

Sure Phil is more open to discussing the issue... why? because vital resources are flowing into neighboring State's coffers. Just because someone says No - should not be interpreted as Never.

That guy or gal you pursued in school or College started off saying No, remember? For some they now the Mr or Mrs.

I'll believe any concerted effort to bring a lottery there.

OTH if it came to fruition, it would force Alabama to re-consider a lottery since that would then be the last hold out in the Bible belt.

Players are more apt to play if they know where the profits are being spent i.e. Education.

If the State is putting their Lottery profits in the General Fund then players may not support this.

Creating a lottery has been mostly just a sidebar debate in Mississippi and the Legislature for decades oft discussed, but never gonna happen.

Ever since former Gov. Ray Mabus' ill-fated push for one in 1990 helped get him un-elected, any effort to create a lottery has faced a certain gubernatorial veto and was, therefore, moot.

That appears to have changed.

As recently as January, Gov. Phil Bryant called the idea of a lottery a silly notion, and more directly said, I am not for it.... [ More ]
