Indiana's income tax rate hasn't been 3.4% since 2014. As of 1/1/17 the rate dropped again, to 3.23%. In addition all but one county charge a county income tax.

On the site that lists the taxes wigth held for PowerBall for each individual state.................

It lists Indiana as with holding 3.4%

All states with hold 25% Federal with holding.

But it's not 189 million out of 435 million like you're stating. The 435 million is just the projected amount you will receive if you take the annuity option. The 435 million doesn't actually exist yet. The cash value is what they actually have in the pot.

Read the article better..

The jackpot was $435.3 million.

The cash value was $263.5 million

The after withholding tax payout on the lump sum was $189 million

1-189/263.5 = 28.27% ... 25% withholding + 3.27% State Tax.

Pennsylvania has a right to know law so they release your name or part of your name, city, etc. This applies even if you claim via a LLC or trust.

I agree with Artist, I can think of a dozen middle aged men that are Purdue graduates that are working in an industrial field. This is Indiana! And since many of the engineers make a very good living unless he pulls up in a Lamborghini it is a safe bet they won't think of him as a lottery winner.

I think he did well covering his tracks as Indiana is NOT an anonymous state. If he has a good LLC he should at least be able to stay undercover.

If it was me in their shoes I would approach a few e commerce websites. I would then hire a lawyer, financial planner to buy them out and get everyone to my search engine and do different things. I have huge ideas in the works. Fortunately I wouldn't let my identity to be known but there are other alternatives out there. Invest in mutual bonds, ira, and stocks too.

Smart on that winner. If they ever do get known then sometime down the road.

I don't really feel he gave out too much info to identify himself. That info could apply to thousands of people there. There are a lot of Purdue engineers and other tech grads in that area. It is a huge public university with a decent amount of industry. I might give out similar info in other categories and it would apply to likely 10,000 or more people. Yeah, so much for anonymity . The press release has so many clues, it's ridiculous. What's the point of describing where he works, and even more so, where he went to University?? How did that info even come up? Do you have to disclose such things? Or did he just blab it all out in excitement at the lottery office? Perhaps future winners in anonymous states should fabricate a personal history to throw the hyenas off their trail.

I told my husband and sister I bet the winner would be in Indiana and it was and I said that they would form an LLC and they did. I think there is something fishy going on in Indiana. With all the lottery arrest in 2016 I hope this is investigated.It's not sour grapes or me even predicting it. It's that it is a pattern you see when you step back and look at it the last 2 years. Just my thoughts.

This winner still owes 14.6% in taxes to the IRS. Indiana took out 25% for the IRS. The winner owed 39.6% total federal taxes due. If the winner earns anymore money this year he will owe the top tax rate on that amount too.

Saying that he is a middle-aged man born in Indiana would have been enough information for the press release, especially for a state that will allow you to claim anonymously.

To say what industry he works in and what college he attended is enough information for his co-workers to figure it out.

How many male Purdue University alumnus from Lafayette are there, who are middle-aged and work in a manufacturing plant in Lafayette?

Indiana state tax rate is 3.3%

Indiana is a weird state in terms of income tax. Besides the state income tax there's a separate county income tax in all but one county. Lafayette is in Tippecanoe County, where the rate is 1.1%.

If he only received 189 million, then he lost over 50% to taxes. That sounds like a huge amount of money to lose to taxes.

Indiana state tax rate is 3.3% and the federal tax rate would be 39.6%. So the amount he received has to be wrong.
