I had a winning ticket on my name, just one bought for me. It was 10000 DEM and it passed on ZDF tv-channel. The amount was given to children with problems. It is kind of hard to sign the receipt to give that money away. That might be like 20000 to 30000 dollars today?

100 locations? Hmmm. I don't know. My father one time hit for $10,000 but couldn't collect because of disability or something, so he sold the ticket for like $6,000(+/-)

The person who bought it would have to pay taxes on it (about $2,000) but would still make $2,000 (+/-) for cashing the ticket.

OK, perhaps we can calculate how many prizes he won $600. We know roughly how much he spent, and thus, can figure how many tickets he's purchased. From there we can find the prize frequency distribution of the specific lotto he was playing and plug in the appropriate number of tickets. Then, because he has a large sample size, we can, with a good degree of confidence, assume that his results were the mean expected result over time and find out how much he won in smaller prizes.

Well the article only listed winnings that you had to file of 600$ or more. Since most rarely get the $600+ prize (once for me) these numbers did not include all the smaller prizes he won. Therefore the loss amount will be alot less. The important thing is he could afford to blow 300$ a day, therefore he got more $600+ then most of us since we don't spend as much.

My brother was a big video poker player. He used to tell us he won $65,000 one year just from royal flushes. Then he would admit it only took $190,000 of his 401k to do it. Sad to say he died broke and $18,000 in debt to the IRS and who knows how much to credit cards.

I always told him, I'm lucky because I've never been lucky. I've never won more than $300 at one time.

I live in a state that does not allow anonymity at all. However, I'd still claim the prize with a trust, even if my name and face are publicized, because of the protection against creditors and frivolous lawsuits that they are used for in the first place.

Oh dear, SixChar, it appears that none of these winners exceeded their lifetime expenditures! Even figuring on the Gross, using earnings that were already charged Fed and State Income Taxes, is bad money to be buying tickets with!

This is a major mental problem for these frequent lottery winners. Distressing.

If their names are disclosed and somebody looks into it for a story that's a completely different angle.

Did I skip over the part were it said they got the names via FOIAs?

If you claim anonymously and your jealous neighbor finds out and takes out an ad in the paper exposing you there's nothing you can do.

Nobody said names cannot be found. In anonymous states FOIAs won't reveal the winner's identity. You are moving the goal posts here.

That doesn't change the fact their names were found.

There is a huge difference between a state lottery announcing the names and address of prize winners and someone finding the names and addresses using the Freedom of Information Act. But at the end of the day if their names are found regardless of who finds it, the prize winners are not anonymous.

Somebody got the data from the lottery yet lots of people here think they can remain anonymous by claiming using a trust. Just because some state lotteries won't publish the winners names doesn't mean that info can be found and investigated.

He says in the article that he spends about 300 bucks a day, and gives money away like candy. Out of that 1.2 million, he probably netted about a third or less after taxes, expenditures and giveaways.

How can he live in public housing with income that high? That's my first question. Second I'll say Congrats on the double triple cash word win. I only won $500 once on that.
