We the people are talking about how extremely rare it is for a $40million jackpot to pay out $3mil for 2nd prize in CA.

It makes complete sense if you understood how it works. The jackpot is based on how much money has accumulated since the last time somebody won the jackpot. The 5+0 prize is based on how much money has accumulated since the last time somebody won the 5+0 prize.

Like Redd55 said, the Mega Millions jackpot prize amount doesn't really have anything to do with the five-of-five (no Mega) prize amount in CA--except for larger-than-usual rollover amounts due to increasing sales when the jackpot is large.

It may be irrelevant to you, but not to me Redd. Let me take you back to May 19th of 2013. One Gloria Mackenzie from FL wins the PB jackpot to the tune of $590 mil. Two of the 5 numbers that win are players from CA. The payout? $2.3 mil a piece. Now that s from a $590 mil jackpot. Here you have a $40mil Jackpot and the payout is $3 mil? So, players poured more money into the $40 mil jackpot, than the $590 mil one? Really

Well wander73, the California lottery just sent me a reply via your dreaded Facebook. Hello Jeffrey. That is correct, the 5 out of 6 winner Friday night won $3,019,345 .

The whole point as to inquisitiveness is that I thought, knowing you guys (CA) have a para-muteul payout system for secondary prizes is it seemed unusual IMO that it would be so high. To be frank about it was thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of $200K + especially with the jackpot ONLY $40 million.

I dont know what you people are talking about. The CA Lottery website has it right and has had it right since they announced the results of Friday's drawing two hours after the drawing. While no one won the MM jackpot of $40 million, someone did win the second prize which was $3,019,345. While tomorrow's jackpot will be $45 million, second prize will reset at about $125 -150k. If some other website got the numbers wrong, that's on them.

Bizarre to say the least BD. That was for the starting jp of $40mil. There has been 2nd prize payouts for less than $100,000 on a jp of over $100mil plus in the recent past. This was probably the residual effect of Wow, someone won the JP in CA, perhaps the pixie dust is still falling.

PB and MM have a business plan , so to speak, that depends on a large number of ticket sales when the jackpot gets to a large number. If you reduce the states that play down to a fraction of what it is today, they will have to change the rules in order to make the same % on each ticket.

Here is how to understand why... (for PB, anyway, basically the same thing)... the jackpot starts at $40 million. If the jackpot is not won, it increases by the greater of $10 million, or 32.5% of ticket

True Redd55. There was a huge jackpot winner from the South Bay a couple of years ago. Asian gentlemen if l am not mistaken. Would not be surprised if this winner is one as well.Then there was that winner from San Bruno or San Mateo that collected quarters dimes in order to play the jp a few years ago, and he won big as well. Not good with names, but there it is.

it cannot possibly matter what state you live in. if california sells 20 times more tickets than missouri then the probability is that they will have 20 winners to missouri's 1. that's it, in a nutshell. you pick 5 + 1 numbers in missouri or bangladesh as long as they are the correct ones you win.

I think the only true answer is that the jackpots would take longer to win if those states were eliminated but they would also take longer to reach a certain amount in which more than the usual person buys in. Meaning that if you eliminated those states the jackpots would still be won once they reached....in this case $540 Million. So all in all nothing changes. Those states don t advance jackpots, they stop jackpots from rolling because it s way too easy to win in those states. Sure jackpots will build more slowly but they will build to astronomical amounts. I live in Missouri and it s REALLY hard to win in this state.

Exactly what do you think advances the jackpots?

The more money that comes in the higher the jackpot. There's no such thing as a lock but the smart money says you're the only one on LP that doesn't know this.

Eliminate the states that pour the most money in and guess what happens.

Since it's so easy to win play Mega Millions Friday the 27th,everyone is waiting for the San Jose winner to claim so $40M would be a good jackpot to hit.

Most of those states also have the highest number of player in general. So you know the more people in a state that play the higher their chance of winning will be. I had told someone that Tenn wouldn't win because they used up all their luck with that 1.6 Billion .....obviously California doesn't apply to that lol. No matter how many owners of the ticket there are be safe. Personal security is a top priority. Copy what Marvin Mae Acosta from Chino Hills, CA did. We now know only their names and that they moved out of their home a day before claiming. They made the decision to move out after six months passed. They won 1/3 of the record PB jackpot of $1.5 billion U.S. dollars. We have no idea where they are today.
