Religiosity has declined all over the country since it was last on the ballot, so if it ever got on the ballot again I don't think most of the pushback would come from church folk. I think opponents are more likely to point out that it functions as a regressive tax, which may the best argument against it in AL that ranks so high in poverty. Still, I would bet that it would pass if it were a simple proposal that puts all the money to education and doesn't include special privileges for the Poarch... [ More ]

It is kind of ironic that all kinds of Nevada cars go to Primm Lotto in CA and heard that Utah folks go to neighboring states to play as well. Do as I say, not as I do.

Alabama's got the same problem as Utah and Nevada combined. They got religious people against it (like Utah) and established gambling vemues blocking it (like Nevada). I don't think they'll get a lottery on the ballot this November. And if miraculously they did I don't think voters would approve it.

I'm taking a back seat on this and will see what transpires, if anything. Not liking what I read with too many hands in the til already if passed.

A drive across the Mississippi state line is becoming a common trip for Alabamians who want to play the state's new lottery.

At least twice a week, Aretha told us as she bought a ticket.

At least once a week, Joseph said from the convenient store right across the state line.

I would rather spend it where we live so we can pay for everything over there, said Brenda Gerganus as she bought a handful of tickets .
