It started with the PA Lottery blaming skill games and lack of PB and MM must play jackpots and apparently now spread to other state lotteries.

Drew Svitko, executive director of the Pennsylvania Lottery, blames the anticipated less profitable year that the lottery is having to the proliferation of games of skill and lack of big Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots.

I don't think the lotteries are in danger of failing completely; I think they do not perform as well as they could due to hyper control by the state governments.

I wish governments would get the heck out of people's private lives and let them spend their own money the way they want.

Todd, don't you think the writing has been on the wall for lotteries in general? Remember way back when folks would get excited for $1 million jackpots and IMHO even sky high jackpots just don't get folks interest like in the past.

State governments have no business dictating what the lottery will or won't do, but don't think that will change anytime soon--if ever.

You can actually blame the state governments more than the state lotteries. In fact, the majority of the time the state lotteries are hamstrung in their ability to start new types of games and adjust the payouts upward.

Almost every lottery that had decreased revenues cited lower than expected MM and PB sales and basically because there were no $billion jackpots. And now some are blaming competition. But just not horse racing, Bingo, casinos, or home poker games; blame a game players apparently prefer over the games the lottery offers.
